My Take On The Republican Victory In Georgia's Special Congressional Election

Reuters: Trump seizes on Republican victory in Georgia to push agenda

U.S. President Donald Trump knocked Democrats on Wednesday for obstructing his agenda, one day after a fellow Republican won a congressional race in Georgia that was widely seen as a referendum on his young, turbulent presidency.

Former Georgia secretary of state Karen Handel on Tuesday defeated political newcomer Democrat Jon Ossoff, 52 percent to 48 percent. The 4-point win in the most expensive congressional race in history was a blow to Democrats, who sought to wrest control of a suburban Atlanta district that Republicans have held since the 1970s.

The election will not significantly change the balance of power in Washington, where Republicans control the White House and both chambers of Congress.

WNU Editor: I do not live in the U.S. .... but here is my take on what I am seeing. After outspending the Republican opponent 7 to 1, and getting (only God knows on how much) massive free advertising from the main stream media .... to lose like this .... with all the energy that was poured into the race and against an opponent who looks like a mom from a 1950s sitcom .... must be devastating for Democrats, and the post-election analysis shows it ....

Democrats Seethe After Georgia Loss: 'Our Brand Is Worse Than Trump' -- New York Times
Angry Democrats in Blame Game After Georgia Defeat -- NBC
Anguished Democrats bicker over meaning of Georgia loss -- The Boston Globe
Not yet, Democrats, not yet. And maybe not ever. -- Tom Toles (Washington Post)

The polls were wrong (again). Arguing that this was a referendum on President Trump was not enough to swing voters (if it swung anyone at all). And as for Democrat momentum .... there is none. As I had mentioned more than once .... if the Democrats want to defeat Republicans .... they have to change their tactics because they are not working. But here is an easy prediction .... the Democrats  are not going to change their tactics or policies .... they cannot nor do they have any interest in doing so.

Update: In the category that this is something that  I cannot make it up .... some are saying that these recent Democrat loses are actually wins .... Karen Handel victory has silver lining for Democrats (Newsweek)

Update #2: Yup .... Jon Ossoff's $23 Million Loss Shows Dems Have No Idea How to Win in the Age of Trump (Patricia Murphy, Daily Beast).

Update #3: Speaking of young voters, this says volumes on what is the political/social culture among the young in America today .... Millennials say student debt as bad as global warming, worse than North Korea (Washington Examiner).

The Democrats need to purge their leadership, and move to the center or appear to anyway. Many of the policies they are pushing are just not acceptable for the swing voters and it's the swing voters that win elections. Gun Owners they vote on one issue and and are a big block, leave guns alone and a lot of these guys wont even vote, the Liberals in Canada found that out. The Transgendered issues cause a lot of people to vote Republican, dump them as well. Then there is the Immigration/Refugees/Illegals, another issue that people are fed up with. Dump the positions in these three areas and the next election will go Democrat. These issues and slimy leadership have many people feeling very negatively towards the Democrats and Trump got those voters because of this, these issues cause a swing of 2 or 3 million votes, and he won. Stay the course and Trump will win 2020.

Handel won by +3.7 points, in Newts old riding, that traditionally votes Republican +17, and was won by +20.4, after Republicans spent over $38 million, all told.

Ossoft ran "right", was an unknown staffer, and spent $22.8 million, most of which came from individual donations on line.

Trumpday #152.

All told, over $60 million was spent in this one election.

Follow the money.

You might not have noticed over the past 30 years, but there's a Professional class of pundits and Dems who's core message has been The Democrats are doomed, before, during and after every election, even the ones the Dem's win.

As for turn out, American's barely turn out for Presidential Elections these days, ( Trump/Clinton saw a 55% turn out), let alone Special Elections for a House Seat.

Jay
The percentage spread never impresses me. Afterall .... who remembers Bill Clinton's popular vote when he won the Presidency in 1992.

The doom and gloom that I hear from the Democrats are the same doom and gloom that I hear from the Republicans. The only exception to that rule was the last election where everyone thought the Hillary Clinton was going to trounce Trump ... including many Republicans who were hopeful for that outcome.

People not showing to vote is also something that I do not understand. When I earned the right to vote I have gone religiously to every federal/provincial/municipal election. And if there is no one that I like .... so what .... there is always the Rhinoceros Party. :)

When your two presidential candidates have about 60percent unfavorable ratings, it is pretty clear that they were not selected in a very democratic process. Faced with yet another chose the lesser of two evils election, many Americans chose the "none of the above" option that is our right as Americans in a rigged to party oligarchy system where the power of your political speech is defined by size of the check you can write.

Wow!

Fred,

I read the rest of the thread. Just because someone hates Maddow's partisan hackery they are anti-gay?

Really? I dislike Senator SNL just as much. Or Nancy Pelousy.

Rachel Maddow lost viewers last time when she had 1 year of Trump's tax returns. How many will Madcow lose this time?

Canada can't make mistakes.

It is not possible. At one time 4 of Canada's subs were laid up. Now one is being used as a 'training ship' and another is in the yards. So that class really has only 2 functioning ships.

Really, how many 'road miles' or should I say sea miles can you put on with a handful of ship that keep within sight of land?

Canada has like 12 frigates. What Canada should fear is getting beaten by the Icelandic or ISIS navies. After all Iceland won a war against Britain after WW2 and Britain's navy is much more formidable than Canada's

More trouble for Canada’s Navy and it’s only destroyer 2015 article. Canada might have given up and kicked the bucket.
