Fred Weir, CSM: Do the US and Russia need clearer rules of engagement?
Barely a week after Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin sat down in a bid to iron out their differences, the effort appears to be in tatters.
The scandal engulfing Mr. Trump's administration, over its alleged election collusion with Russia, has grown so intense that leading Russian foreign-policy specialists say they fear the very principle of US-Russia rapprochement is in danger of being thrown out with the Trump bathwater. Three key deals that seemed to be struck at the meeting – to work out joint rules for security in cyberspace, a ceasefire in southern Syria, and a new US push to support the Minsk accords in Ukraine – are already floundering.
Russian cold war veterans say that efforts to maintain positive diplomatic dialogue have always been hostage to daily headlines and adverse geopolitical events. But today, they say, channels of communication appear woefully inadequate and there is no preexisting set of rules to fall back on – straining basic, practical communication between the US and Russia.

WNU Editor: With the exception of President Trump .... there is no political sentiment in Washington today for any form of rapprochement with Moscow on any key issue. This sentiment is across party lines, amplified in the press, and supported by much of the foreign policy establishment. My prediction .... the White House policy towards Russia is now paralysed, and I expect the Kremlin will be responding to it by expelling 30 US diplomats as well as seizing U.S. property in Russia in the same manner that President Obama did last year. After that .... the pressure will build for President Trump to do something equivalent .... and after that .... who knows.

I see the Democrats narrative of Russian collusion as their way of saying don't drop the sanctions. That's all it is.
The Russians will do nothing further as they all ready achieved most of what they needed with minimal loss of life. Well relatively.
Someday some country will put the USA under sanctions. I hope we fair as well as the Russians and the Iranians and Qatarians.

The Obama administration "reset" the relationship....because it was bad (????) before. We can see the result now. As everybody was talking badly about the "inheritance" of the Bush administration, nobody will talk about the "inheritance" of the Obama one.

Thanks for the links. I will check them out as time permits. Suffice it to say many Americans understand for America to survive it is absolutely imperative that we end Cold War 2 AND nothing Russia has suggested is unreasonable. As such, Trump's "connections" and even "collusion" with Russia are a national treasure to many Americans that are rightly viewed by many as valuable avenues to end Cold War 2.
Now if you want to fight Russia, by all means STRAP IT ON!! I'm pretty sure Ukraine and Poland have opennings. They've rather enjoyed using Americans as pawns in their power struggle against Russia. I'm pretty sure they'll find a Canadian equally tasty as they've found us Americans.

By chimpy II I'm pretty sure you mean George W Bush, the worst president in US history by far. Agreed, the Iraq was misguided and did not help. Then someone piled on by continuing to expand NATO in violation of the agreements that ended Cold War 1, sponsored endless "color revolutions" in former Soviet Republics with government hostile to Russia, funded numerous NGOs in opposition to the Russian government, organized or at least strongly supported a coup against the elected government of Ukraine, and I could go on.
All of this happened before DJT and all of these so called Russian connections have been unable to help us set this right. Again, if someone wants to go fight Russia, they should STRAP IT ON. The twin crazies of Ukraine and Poland probably need volunteers.
It seems to me that the Democrats and media by being as reckless as they are along with significant help from Republicans are undermining a very careful diplomatic process that took months if not years to very carefully and meticulously put together. Perhaps I am missing something.
