Bill Gertz, Asia Times: CIA analyst: Beijing poses a greater threat than Russia
In an unusually candid talk, agency's Michael Collins said China's growing confidence and resolve – fueled by inaction against Chinese hegemony over the past several years – are a worry
A senior CIA analyst has offered a rare public glimpse into American intelligence analysis of China. Michael Collins, deputy assistant director and head of the agency’s East Asia mission center, believes more attention should be focused on China and that recent public angst about Russia is distracting America from the threat posed by China.
“There’s been a lot of talk about Russia as a competitor, a country that sees the liberal international order as something they don’t necessarily subscribe to, that is actively engaged in trying to undermine US influence in various areas around the world, and that has [the] capability to do it,” Collins said at a security forum in Aspen, Colorado.

China has one big problem. They have very few powerful allies and a whole lot of powerful adversaries.
/and not making a lot of new friends right now either.
Well, that's why I say : American politician are "locked" in the 20th century and don't see the future. Nixon make "good" with China against USSR, we have to do the same with China.
An agreement with Russia would be 100% positive for both countries in every field: economically, militarily, geopolitically. China has a "big eye" on Siberia and a "big eye" on Pacific. That's up to us to make the right choice. But I fear that's a little bit too late. Sad.
Jac,
You are correct that an agreement with Russia would be 100% good for both us and Russia. I've been trying to point this out for quite some time here and elsewhere. There's no downside combined with huge upside potential.
Why can't we persue this? Are US leaders pathologically insane? Are they so afraid of the Clintons they'd do anything to avoid conflict with them even to the point of going out of their way to exacerbate Cold War 2? I don't know.
The Russians and team Trump understand this. To their credit, team Trump spent many long months, if not years, carefully building a network of contacts and establishing a diplomatic process. To their credit, the Russians have refrained from responding as much as they could have to essentially what appears to be naked agression on the part of US leadership against Russia in the hopes that the US would aquire sane leadership so the benefits of better relations could be achieved. Unfortunately thanks to the crazies in Congress, the bureaucracy, and the media this is all shot to h!ll right now.
The military and the intell people are serious about China, but business, Wall St, the political rats and do-gooders/Marxists are full steam ahead on China it's all about the money, they would sell their souls for a buck. The sale of their products is what finances China power, if the US was serious they would stop imports from China, and put a high tax on food exports to China, this would cause China a hell of an economic problem and as a result they would have social consequences. I don't expect this to happen anytime soon, the corrupt traitors on Wall St and do-gooders/Marxists will stop any attempt to counter China.
