NBC: Trump to Address Nation on ‘Path Forward’ in Afghanistan on Monday Night
President Donald Trump will discuss the "path forward" in Afghanistan in a speech on Monday night, the White House said in a statement Sunday.
The speech, to be delivered at the Fort Myer military base in Arlington, Virginia, at 9 p.m. ET, will "provide an update on the path forward for America’s engagement in Afghanistan and South Asia," the statement said.
The address comes after a lengthy strategy review in which White House and Pentagon officials mulled a more aggressive role for the American military in Afghanistan.

WNU Editor: So much for my hope that he was not going to make this announcement very quickly. As to what will be announced .... with Steve Banning gone and this policy now being driven by the Generals .... sighhhh .... I am not optimistic, but I will wait and see.

Mattis was in the air en route to AFG last night. Aboard one of those E-4B 747's. I would be surprised and disappointed is there was a large troop increase. I trust Mattis' council on this. /after all he a Warrior Monk, not a War Monger.
I must be missing something...
I'm not exactly clued in on the whole Afghanistan-US commitment, so I may be speaking from ignorance here, but why can't the US simply pull out?
My guess - Too much investment in a country they invaded, too many promises made and a need to prop up a country that has been devastated by internal strife and war.
Even if that's the case, what is really keeping them there, and what would be the benefits of a troop increase?
Just seems very illogical to me.
D. Plowman,
You are not alone.
"You are not alone." I agree. Pulling out has huge strategic benefits for America, no downside risks, huge political benefits, and doing so would provide POTUS a huge beffer against impeachment. After all being the POTUS who got us out of Afghanistan would be huge. As such, there is no reason not to redeploy. Redeploying away from Afghanistan is one of those rare instances where strategic and political interests actually converge.
Russ,
I would tend to trust General Mattis as well. This is a man who earned the respect of those who served under him. These people rejoiced when he was nwmed Secretary of Defense. They were grateful that "one of them" FINALLY had a role in setting US foreign policy. They thought that FINALLY fruitless foreign operations that don't advance and even undrtmine US strategic interests would FINALLY be ending.
If he has betrayed these men and women, what was the price to do so. Of course anmouncing a redeployment in prime time can only help POTUS. As has been said, we shall see. If there is a "surge," I will be disappointed as will most Americans.
