Curt Mills, National Interest: Will Europe Rebel Against U.S. Sanctions?

In comprehensively punishing Moscow, Washington risks further cleaving itself from senior European leadership.

The United States finalized new sanctions against Moscow this week, roping it in with perennial bad actors Iran and North Korea. Despite complaints from Donald Trump and Rex Tillerson—the pair of ex-CEOs that now lead U.S. foreign policy—the administration assented to the “flawed” package on Wednesday. While Trump is sometimes accused of abandoning the trans-Atlantic alliance and scuttling the post-war order, the president now risks further damage to relations with many in Europe by targeting Russia with fresh sanctions.

WNU editor: The Europeans have a choice .... cheap and reliable Russian energy in exchange for other supplies that may not be that cheap, will need a new infrastructure to accommodate it, and maybe not reliable. The Europeans also do not want to politically isolate Moscow .... they know too well that such actions will not serve their long term interests. My prediction .... the Europeans (primarily Germany) will go along with these sanctions for the short term, but they will want a quid-pro-quo .... and that quid-pro-quo will be no major changes in current U.S. trade policy with Europe.

I don't see the Europeans have much choice, they need energy and Russia has it and can deliver at a good price. From a business aspect it's a no brainier, also as far as peace goes the Russians will have no incentive to attack it's best customers, they need Europe as much as Europe needs them. The West should be courting the Russians away from China, let them have Ukraine it's a small price to pay and it's not like we in the West haven't sold others down the river before, it's a shitty thing to do but it's not personal it's just the price that needs to payed to bring the Russians in, we could throw in the Baltic countries as a sweetener as well. The most important thing is to isolate China and the best move is to break up the Russian and Chinese romance.
