: Military Exercises Are Tearing Up Russia’s Infrastructure

When 500+ armored vehicles hit the road, watch out

Russian Pres. Vladimir Putin has been racing to bolster the Russian military’s fighting abilities with frequent, large-scale exercises near his country’s western borders. But one recent story from Glavny, which covers western Russia, indicates that the exercises are taking a toll on infrastructure and local governments which are swarmed by armored vehicles.

In recent days, 574 vehicles of the crack 74th Guards Air Assault Division set off at night from its base at Pskov near the Estonian border for a training site at Strugi Krasnye some 40 miles to the northeast. The lumbering convoy headed up a cracked, pitted, asphalt-covered federal highway, tearing up the road and inflicting more than half-a-million dollars in damage.

WNU editor: This is one of my pet peeves when I am saying in Moscow .... and one that I have voiced more than once in this blog. These military exercises are a sight to see .... but the damage that the tank tracks inflict on the roads .... and the time it takes for the city crews to repair these roads .... makes me wonder if it is all worth it. And yes .... my car has been more than once damaged by flying asphalt after a parade because the idiot in front of me (usually in his cheap but admittedly indestructible 25 year old Lada) thinks it's cool to spin his wheels on broken pavement while my German car is behind him. Grrrr ....

It's worth it. Think about it. Russia's pride largely revolves around their military. Without the parades and reminding everyone about a victory over Germany (ok it took like ten other nations as well), they wouldn't feel that sense of pride and nationalism. And then they'd think about Putin and how he kills opposition leaders and amasses billions of Russian money. .from its people. Yeah, these parades are all worth it, for Putin to stay in power and remind everyone about a victory he didn't do squad about (he wasn't born yet). So, don't complain about the roads. Be smarter and see what's really going on here. ;)

I wonder how that compares to the damage that under-investment and natural disasters are doing to American infrastructure.

That is not healthy for a civil society. That is envy one of the 7 deadly sins according to the Roman Catholic Church. I am not RC, but there are some in the extended family and I did stay in Holiday Inn Express last night.

I was just teasing you with both comments, knowing that you have a Russian background, to see your censorship. You really don't censor much haha I like that about you. And your English is great.. just the grammar. .but then again. .your grammar is probably better than that of many native speakers. .and in today's world, we all write quickly, from the phone, while doing other things :) so yeah, ignore the grammar remarks. .just making fun.
