BBC: Catalan referendum: Region's independence 'in matter of days'
Catalonia will declare independence from Spain in a matter of days, the leader of the autonomous region has told the BBC.
In his first interview since Sunday's referendum, Carles Puigdemont said his government would "act at the end of this week or the beginning of next".
Meanwhile, Spain's King Felipe VI said organisers of the vote put themselves "outside the law".
He said the situation in Spain was "extremely serious", calling for unity.
Hundreds of thousands of people across Catalonia have been protesting over Spanish police violence during the vote, during which nearly 900 people were hurt.
During the vote, 33 police officers were also injured, local medical officials said.

WNU Editor: Spain will respond if this independence declaration is made. And while I expect extreme measures will be employed, it is how the Catalans will react in response to these measures that concerns me.

The Catalan response concerns you. The Spanish response concerns me. Are they going to behave like thugs as they seem to have in the past? In such a case, the Catalans are obviously going to need to respond by defending themselves. They can "respond" by continuing to allow Spain to oppress them or they seek independence.
Very respectfully I'm not sure why the Catalan response would be a concern. It seems a greater concern is how Spain will respond. The lack of any condemnation of Spanish actions by the major Eurpean powers is also a concern.
Perhaps Catalonia did not really wsnt independence. This may have been an "openning bid" in an attempt to negotiate a redress of grievances. By acting as they did the Spanish have made negotiations pretty near impossible.
As I've stated, Catalonia will achieve independence. The Spanish action reeks of either desperation or extreme stupidity. Spain is in a hole here. The best thing to do when in a hole is to STOP DIGGING!!
The same generally applies to the "west." We are in a hole. The best thing our leaders can do is STOP DIGGING!! The best thing we as citizens can do is to not support leaders who continue digging!!
I’ve seen people trying to compare this to the Hungarian uprising of 56’. I don’t think it is a very good comparison. But it has the potential for some very bad optics. It’s a tough spot for a country. When the South in the US tried it, it was pretty brutal. No president wants to be the person who allowed their country to fracture. Any president who tries to hold a country together with violance looks horrible. A tough spot. With the financial problems Spain has and with the wealth of this region. I think they will be willing to take some extreme measures. I’m very curious to see how the EU reacts through all this.
