The security chief of Islamic fundamentalist group Hamas has survived an 'assassination attempt' after his car was blow up in the Gaza Strip.

Tawfiq Abu Naim is recovering in hospital with minor injuries after the bombing on Friday afternoon.

The group has not released details of how he survived the explosion in central Gaza but it is thought he was not in his car at the time.

Hamas has been the de facto governing authority of the Gaza Strip since its takeover of that area in 2007.
