Iraqi Kurds Deploy Thousands Of Fighters To Kirkuk To Deter Any Iraqi Attempt To Retake The City

BBC: Iraqi Kurds send reinforcements to Kirkuk amid army 'threats'

Thousands of Kurdish fighters have been deployed to Iraq's disputed Kirkuk region, officials say, amid fears that government forces want to retake it.

The autonomous Kurdistan Region's Vice-President, Kosrat Rasul, said it was responding to "threats" by the army.

Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi has said he would not use the army against Iraqi citizens, but convoys were seen heading towards Kirkuk late on Thursday.

The move comes two weeks after the Kurds held an independence referendum.

Voters living in Kurdish-controlled areas - including Kirkuk - voted overwhelmingly in favour of secession, prompting calls from Kurdish officials for negotiations.

But Mr Abadi said the referendum was illegal and demanded it be annulled.

One reason I do not expect the U.S. to0 defend the Kurds is this.

The Kurds have no port city.

So they would have to go through another country such as Iran, Iraq, Syria or Turkey.

Turkey has been drifting into the hard core Islamicist camp since before 1999. In or before 1999 Erdogan was mayor of Istanbul. The writing was on the wall back then.

Look how hard it is too maintain Afghanistan and not even barely at that with a back stabbing nation like Pakistan.

If it were not for the new president, if Karzai were still there, I would say give them over to their vices.

There is no port city and after years of Leftist agitation going back to Port Huron and before there is a divided house toward any military action.

Is Port Huron a leftist shipyard where the Kurds keep their sailboats?
