WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said on Tuesday the United States should consider staying in the Iran nuclear deal unless it were proven Tehran that was not abiding by the agreement or that it was not in the U.S. national interest to do so.

Though Mattis said he supported U.S. President Donald Trump’s review of the agreement curbing Iran’s nuclear program, the defense secretary’s view was nonetheless far more positive than Trump who has called the deal agreed between Iran and six world powers in 2015 an “embarrassment”.

Trump is weighing whether the deal serves U.S. security interests as he faces a mid-October deadline for certifying that Iran is complying with the pact, a decision that could sink an agreement strongly supported by the other powers that negotiated it.

Mattis says stay the course on the Iran Deal and Afghanistan.

Inertia?

Are we beholden to bad polices of the predecessors so much we cannot change them?

If it had been up to me (It is not), I would have pulled out on Karzai in a heartbeat and felt good about it. The current Afghan leader seems to be a much more decent and substantive man than the Karzai and his klepto brother.

It is a treaty made also with 5 allies. if we pull out, Iran has the go ahead for making nukes. that then is ok with you? If we pull out, what have we accomplished?

pull out and Iran makes nukes..the treaty involves a number of our allies.

1) The military facilities are off limits. The Iranian could be building bombs there. Apparently you missed WNUs post on that.

2) Having France and Germany as part of the P%+ 'me too' is meaningless. they traded with North Vietnam during the Vietnam War.

Exactly what idiotic deal has the one place likely to house nuclear materials or weapons off limits?.
Matis is smart, he does not want to have contingencies for or fight a war on 2 fronts.
Once Kim has been dealt with then the tune will change.

Fred, while I agree with you that we should fear an Iran that has nuclear weapons, we cannot stop it from happening without changing who we, as democratic nations, are and what we stand for. Let's face it, the deal is likely not working to protect us, as we cannot be sure Iran is not violating the deal every day and using our money/easing of sanctions to even speed it up. Mind you, Iran and north Korea work together on quite a few issues. And there are speculations as to why north Korea made so much progress since 1-2 years...about the time the deal became effective. It wouldn't be unreasonable to think that Iran shares their knowledge with north Korea and north Korea shares testing results with them. The risk that we all are facing is not only a nuclear state governed by a mass murderer and torturer (Kim Jong Un), but we'll also be facing potentially Iran, ruled by religious fanatics who already sponsor much of terrorism around the world. If Pakistan worries you (it should), worry about Iran much more. When Russia and the US faced nuclear standoff for a few decades, both sides remained rationale because religion is not as prevalent among the elite as it is in Iran. They really believe what they're preaching - glorious after life and everything. ;)

So if we don't want that to happen and be faced with one or even two countries that are completely not where the rest of the world is at - socially, culturally or politically, we must stop them always before they have the bomb. If you later try and fail you'll not only be responsible for the deaths on your side but also on the other side

Aizino not everyone agrees with the wars the US is and was involved in. Those are free countries and allies are not slaves. Allies help you in wars that are forced on you, they don't necessarily help you in wars you bring elsewhere. Learn the difference.

In your world, if Nazi Germany had threatened Denmark. Britain would go to war, because that affects them. But if Germany threatens Hungary, Britain would not go to war, because lol that is on the other side of Europe from Britain. It does not affect Britain.
