ABC News Online: 'Screwed' by Justin Trudeau, leaders fume over scuppered Trans-Pacific Partnership deal

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has infuriated leaders of 10 other Asia-Pacific countries by pulling a sudden "no show" for the signing of a lucrative trade deal.

Mr Trudeau becomes the second leader, behind Donald Trump, to desert the Trans-Pacific Partnership — but unlike the United States President his motives and future intentions have not been publicly explained.

The 45-year-old Canadian had been due to enter a meeting in Da Nang, Vietnam, where fellow leaders had waited patiently on him to seal the "TPP-11" trade pact — a deal involving Australia, Chile, New Zealand, Brunei Darussalam, Singapore, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, Peru and Vietnam.

WNU Editor: Not showing up and keeping 10 other world leaders waiting .... this is a big no-no when it comes to international summits. The Canadian press is rushing to the Prime Minister's defense .... TPP meeting cancelled in Vietnam as some international media place blame on Trudeau (Toronto Star).

Very childish.

Good thing the petulant Trudeau does not have a nuclear football.

Can you imagine!?

Wow, on that level I have never heard of this. Putin lets people wait, but at least shows up.. at least when it's on equal footing, which this certainly was... wtf?

Oh I get it.. TPP is dead and Mexico doesn't know yet (the Mexican president does, but not the minions sent). Trump told Trudeau about it, and told him that a phone call between Mexico, US and Canada will happen soon and he won't have to attend the meeting.. better even if he doesn't.. and Trudeau, wanting to be the cool kid, followed along

Anon,
Yup .... Putin makes leaders who he does not respect always wait. Germany's Merkel comes to mind. Leaders that he does respect .... President Xi, Japanese PM Abe, former Italian PM Berlusconi .... he is usually waiting for them. As for civilians .... most usually have to wait. President Obama also had a history of keeping people waiting .... especially reporters. President Clinton was always punctual. I guess it depends on the person.

International summits are different .... you do not let leaders hang around and not bother even telling them that you are not showing up. There was a breakdown in communications here .... and people are blaming Trudeau.

4 Reasons to like Putin

1) Putin makes leaders who he does not respect always wait.

2) "Germany's Merkel comes to mind." - Does not respect Herr Merkel

Then there was the dog trick that Putin pulled on Merkel and yet the fool, Merkel, is still clueless.

3) Leaders that he does respect .... President Xi, Japanese PM Abe, former Italian PM Berlusconi .... he is usually waiting for them

4) He is a scrapper. You need that in a leader. You need 'a will to power'. You need other traits as well.

Too many Republicans are candy asses.

Boehner,
McConnell
Corker
McCain
Flake
George H.W. Bush (Mr. Bush had some admirable traits in his youth, but it appears that they did not stick with him all his life.)

"DANANG, VIETNAM—An agreement in principle on the Trans-Pacific Partnership appeared to inch closer to reality late Friday after a frenetic, confusing day of talks and media reports that bluntly blamed Canada and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau for helping to scuttle a scheduled meeting of leaders to discuss the Pacific Rim trade pact.

International Trade Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne summoned journalists just before midnight to say that the TPP trade ministers had agreed to a number of key changes that moved the talks closer to a deal. Canada is better off because of the new developments, Champagne said.

“We don’t settle for just any deal,” Champagne said, acknowledging Trudeau’s decidedly downbeat comments from a day earlier. “If it takes one more day, so be it".

Looks like Trudeau's ploy forced some concessions towards the Canadian Trade Stance.

"Lucrative Trade Deal" it is not. Speaking from a New Zealand point of view the analysis of benefits does not warrant the loss of sovereignty to nameless unelected bureaucrats. Remember the EU started as a trade deal then called the "Common Market".

Trudeau was passive aggressive.

He could have came on time and stuck to his guns.

Very good comment.

There a lot of issues that still remain unresolved. This deal is far from being done.

You need to find an opinion and learn to stick to it,

Either the TPP was ready for signing and Trudeau was completely "undiplomatic",

Or the TPP is not ready for signing and lot's of work still needs to be done.

It can't be both.

Actually it is very simple if anyone bothers to understand these things .... which you clearly do not. These preliminary agreements are always done long before the leaders meet .... so hence the surprise with the no-show. That is undiplomatic .... hence the criticism from the international press (fed by the representatives of these different countries). And this is not even the final agreement .... just something that will lead to the final agreement ... and that is going to take a while.

"These preliminary agreements are always done long before the leaders meet ." - WNU

I hear that same idea/ fact from many people.

I think it is a correct assessment of the way of things are done.

Did the older Trudeau give the younger Trudeau a political education?

Huckabee's daughter said she sat in on some meetings and it gave her an appreciation on how things were done and why?

Smart people don't sign "blank cheques",

And this was not supposed to be a "preliminary agreement" with a vagues commitment to work forward, with the future option of walking away,

but a final agreement based on the previous 8 years of negotiations.

Trudeau's no show for the signing ceremony has put everybody back into "negotiations" mode with "lots of work to be done".

Funny that, what was reported as a "done deal" yeaterday and this morning, now is being reported as "needing a lot of work to be done".

Do you sign "blank cheques" or "undefined contracts" with the details to be worked out later?

War News Updates Editor said...

No one is talking about blank checks (Except you). And no one is talking about a "vague commitment to work forward, with the future option of walking away" (Except you). The Core principles were agreed upon before this meeting .... the Canadian PM changed his mind at the last minute. That is not how these things are done .... but it was done today. In my book .... this is negotiating in bad faith. In the end there is an agreement .... but no informal endorsement yet. I guess we will know more tomorrow.

I meant formal endorsement.

"A final agreement was drafted on 5 October 2015, made public on 5 November 2015, and signed on 4 February 2016 in Auckland, New Zealand, concluding seven years of negotiations. It is the largest regional trade agreement in history.[6][7][8]"

" On 10 November 2017 a planned meeting of TPP countries in Vietnam to hammer out the final details of a renegotiated trade pact was unexpectedly cancelled after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau skipped the event. Trade negotiations have now returned to the ministerial level with International Trade Minister François-Philippe currently in negotiations to resolve some sticking points.[61]"
