DW: Former Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont turns himself in to Belgian police
Catalonia's ex-president Carles Puigdemont and four former cabinet members have turned themselves in to police. They will appear before a judge in the Belgian capital Sunday afternoon.
Sacked Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont and four other former ministers have turned themselves in to Belgian police, the prosecutor's office in Brussels has confirmed. They are due to appear before a Belgian judge Sunday afternoon.
"They were taken into custody at 9:17 a.m. [0817 UTC] - so this morning," said Gilles Dejemeppe, a spokesman for Brussel's prosecutor's office. "This afternoon, the persons involved will be heard by the investigative judge."
The judge has 24 hours - from the time of surrender - to decide on how to proceed with regard to fulfilling Spain's extradition request.
