Newsweek: How Big Is the Russian Army? Putin Wants a Million Troops in his Military
Russian President Vladimir Putin wants more than 1 million troops in his armed forces as of next year—a demand that could obscure the military’s actual strengths and weaknesses.
The Russian leader signed a decree published on the country’s state law database, which set the target for Russia’s military personnel at 1,013,628. The total target figure for staff including civilian support personnel, set to come into force by January 2018, exceeds 1.9 million.

WNU Editor: The draft makes reaching this number easier .... but the Russian military still has a long way to go before it reaches that one million mark.

1mn is a really high number for a country that accuses Europe of overestimating the threats coming from Russia. It's 1% of their population. That's as if the US had more than 3 million soldiers!!
Why do they need so many soldiers?
RT propaganda would tell you because of its vast landmass. Sure. That makes sense lol
While there's no disagreeing that Russia is the biggest country on earth by land mass, 1mn soldiers won't change a thing in that regard. The borders of Russia are so vast they are almost impossible to protect even with 100mn soldiers. Plus when was the last time the West intruded to Russia? 70 years ago..if you count nazi Germany to the west.
When was the last time Russia invaded a country? Oh...Georgia would tell you it was just 5 years ago. Ukraine would tell you Russians are still in their country. Crimea...Poland. ..
So common. Russia needs to really check itself.
Russia isn't just concerned about the West, there is it's eastern issues with China and Muslims to the south.
While Russia has sufficient forces to deal with it's western issues as they stand right now she lacks the ability to pull troops from the south or east if things escalate in the west or vise versa.
