Markkula Center for Applied Ethics: Trust Project Launches Indicators
Leading news outlets establish transparency standards to help readers identify trustworthy news sources
SANTA CLARA, Calif., Nov. 16, 2017 --- At a time when the public’s trust in news is declining in much of the world, the news industry is launching a new set of transparency standards that help people easily assess the quality and reliability of journalism.
Leading media companies representing dozens of news sites have begun to display Trust Indicators, which provide clarity on the organizations’ ethics and other standards, the journalists’ backgrounds, and how they do their work. These indicators, created by leaders from more than 75 news organizations as part of the nonpartisan Trust Project, also show what type of information people are reading – news, opinion, analysis or advertising.

WNU Editor: Regular readers of this blog know that when it comes to news organizations .... my criticism of the main stream media is not on the news that they cover .... it is on the news that they choose to not cover and/or under-report. Unfortunately .... from what I have read so far .... this is not part of the mandate for the "Trust Project". Their focus is to assess the reliability of a news story and the publisher behind it by allowing users to learn more about the organization behind the news and come to their own conclusions about the content. This sounds great in principle .... but I think most consumers of the news are already prejudiced in their opinions, and they will stick with their news sources whether they have a "Trust Indicator" from this group or not.

But the polls man, the POLLS!
James
the polls show that most if not a majority of Americans get news via social media, and there are no controls over that source of "news."
Who would want to trust a bunch of billionaires who have self appointed themselves to tell us which news sources to trust? It might be more accurately referred to as the "Trust Goebbels Project."
