Are We Just Three Months Away From The U.S. Attacking North Korea?

Mark Seddon, The Guardian: Have we got just three months to avert a US attack on North Korea?

Envoys say the US has till March to stop Kim Jong-un developing a nuclear missile that can hit Washington. The UN must act now to stop the slide to war

The drumbeat for a potentially devastating war on the Korean peninsula, and one that could quickly spread with calamitous consequences, has grown louder in the wake of North Korea’s latest missile test – its most advanced yet. The North’s long-range inter-continental ballistic missile (ICBM) launch was in direct contravention of a battery of UN security council resolutions and in disregard for its increasingly estranged – and last remaining – ally, China.

Meanwhile, a major US and South Korean military exercise began today involving 12,000 military personnel and, for the first time, US F-22 “stealth” raptors, precision bombing aircraft that the North Korean regime has zero chance of spotting with its antiquated systems. In advance of the exercises, the North Korean foreign ministry said that the Trump administration was “begging for nuclear war”, while Trump’s security adviser, HR McMaster, speaking at the Reagan Defense Forum at the weekend, said that “North Korea is the greatest immediate threat to the US.”

WNU Editor: We are a long way from having a war on the Korean peninsula, with the biggest obstacle being South Korea and its reluctance to initiate hostilities. A war of choice will also need US Congressional approval .... where support for such an action is minimal. My prediction. With the current political environment .... even if President Trump wants to attack and start a war, he will be stopped. As for the UN acting to stop North Korea .... I have zero confidence on that front.

Since when is congressional approval required,?
Wasn't 1943 the last time war was actually declared against a nation.

I hope there is no war but the longer the wait once diplomacy proves hopeless the greater the cost to the u.s.
South Korea is not the one being threatened for annihilation day in day out, Trump will preempt it with Japan's blessing and SK reluctant nod once SK red line is breached, and that was a proven ability to fit a operational nuke to a missile.

WNU Editor,

In September 2016 I predicted, at the current rate, six months until war. This is NOT a war of choice. The choice is 1.)wait for North Korea to attack us, hope we can absorb a devastating and crushing blow, and still somehow still be able to respond. 2.)Act to prevent this devastating and crushing blow before it is to late.

As I have stated before this still can be resolved. China and Russia need to recognize America's very legitimate need to feel safe and act to contain the threat. Thus far any steps they have made have only been baby steps and are far to little. There was a time when such baby steps were encouraged but the time for this is long past.

Fazman,

You are correct. It is not South Korea who is being threatened with annihilation day in and day out. Furthermore I would add that South Korea, is, always has been, and currently is an unreliable ally who cannot and should not be trusted. The same generally applies to Japan. Trump has no choice but to preempt it assuming this still can be done. The powers that be in America may have become suicidal. I don't think team Trump is. To not act is suicidal for America. As you point out, Congressional approval is not needed nor has it been needed.

Either way tens of millions of Americans will die, at a minimum, either way. At least by taking preemptive action now, America has a fighting chance to survive. By delaying any longer America has no chance. I would add the article breathlessly talks about an American preemptive action while ignoring the more likely possibility of a preemptive North Korean attack on America. This is what they need to be worried about.

North Korea kind of reminds me of a poker player who had a fabulous hand and overplayed it. To have gotten the US and South Korea to work together on military drills of this magnitude is amazing. With that said we Americans had better be careful. Don't turn our backs for one second on either South Korea or Japan lest we find their knives in our backs.
