Russian Submarine Activity Is Making NATO Nervous

Washington Post: Russian submarines are prowling around vital undersea cables. It’s making NATO nervous.

BRUSSELS — Russian submarines have dramatically stepped up activity around undersea data cables in the North Atlantic, part of a more aggressive naval posture that has driven NATO to revive a Cold War-era command, according to senior military officials.

The apparent Russian focus on the cables, which provide Internet and other communications connections to North America and Europe, could give the Kremlin the power to sever or tap into vital data lines, the officials said. Russian submarine activity has increased to levels unseen since the Cold War, they said, sparking hunts in recent months for the elusive watercraft.

“We are now seeing Russian underwater activity in the vicinity of undersea cables that I don’t believe we have ever seen,” said U.S. Navy Rear Adm. Andrew Lennon, the commander of NATO’s submarine forces. “Russia is clearly taking an interest in NATO and NATO nations’ undersea infrastructure.”

They are probably installing charges that can be detonated remotely / by a closeby sub if/when the need arises. We need drone subs that can be sent down there for inspection or some other method..very difficult to defend undersea property of that length. .relatively easy to attack

Piece of info: China cuts Vietnam's cable about every other year. Don't believe me? Just Google or ask any Vietnamese. I didn't believe at first either but I've witnessed one of those cuts last year. ..the Chinese claimed it was because of a typhoon lol Vietnam barely ever experiences strong Typhoons (unlike eg Philippines who never see their cable cut though) took 10 days until there was decent Internet again. ..think there's 2 or even 3 main cables and one was cut, so they weren't off completely just very very slow. The Vietnamese say it was the Chinese for sure and that they do it all the time.. I don't have evidence, it's just what I've been hearing when I stayed in Vietnam...Just another reason why Chinese aren't popular here
