Yonhap: N. Korea likely to explore possibility of talks with U.S. in 2018: ministry

SEOUL, Dec. 26 (Yonhap) -- North Korea is likely to explore the possibility of dialogue with the United States in 2018 as the communist state seeks to secure a status as a de facto possessor of nuclear weapons, the Ministry of Unification said Tuesday.

"North Korea may continue to advance its nuclear and missile capabilities while searching for an outlet externally," the ministry said in its predictions for North Korea in 2018. "In searching for the recognition of its status as a de facto nuclear-possessing state, (the North) would explore the possibility of negotiations with the U.S."

WNU Editor: The North Koreans have already signaled via through Russia that they will want to talk in the future .... Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov Says North Korea Is Open To Direct Talks With The U.S. (December 9, 2017). The problem is that North Korea has also made it very clear that its nuclear program is non-negotiable. So why the offer for talks? My read is that they are trying to split the South Koreans away from the U.S., and considering the perception that the current South Korea President is eager to make some sort of rapprochement with the North ....
