2017 white paper stresses importance of cooperating with US and Japan

TAIPEI -- Taiwan raised alarms over China's growing military presence in a biennial defense white paper published for the first time under President Tsai Ing-wen on Tuesday, with a particular focus on Beijing's stepped-up military drills in the West Pacific.

China has been conducting more aircraft drills through the Bashi Channel, which separates Taiwan from the Philippines, and the Miyako Strait in Japan's Okinawa Prefecture, according to the 2017 National Defense Report. Chinese forces had conducted 19 long-range exercises this year as of Dec. 11. Nine happened after the Communist Party congress in October, when Chinese President Xi Jinping expressed a desire to build a world-class military by the middle of this century.

The report outlined China's military presence in the West Pacific. The forces are believed to be capable of monitoring and supporting operations in all areas west of the "second island chain" -- a strategic defense line that runs between Japan and Guam.

It is kinda laughable how China is urging for the US to stop its military exercises that goad North Korea, and at the same time, conducting their own exercises that only serve to rattle Taiwan.

Yup
But consider this: while in US you have a relatively informed electorate, who can and often does go on the streets to protest war, actions of war and decisions that can lead to war (see protests from Vietnam war to drone war etc) in China you don't have that. You've got nearly 1.5bn people that are pretty much getting the same news and talking points through the filter of the political party. Sure, you've got your 30-50 million travelers and business men/women who get international input, but that's during a fraction of the time. .even they spend most time at home/in China . So all in all you have a gravely asymmetric information landscape and information uptake. And information is necessary to hope for change in behaviour. Try making your point to a government that doesn't have a democratic party system (it's just one party -no competing thoughts) and doesn't have to answer to its electorate, which is relatively uninformed/biased in any event. It's not just that they are uninformed but misinformed - all with foam in front of their mouths screaming at all of the rest of the world to finally "accept the rise of China". And rise of China is set equal with "all of this belongs to us: Taiwan, south China Sea, and of course world rule" ...if you don't accept this you're an American sympathiser who doesn't get a license to do business in China, get blacklisted on port of entries and if you're already in China and express your views openly you might get detained and get a free visit to one of their sleep-disruption halls, where you stay 1-8 weeks and then will sign a few documents before you get released again. International passport or not... China is on its way too war readiness not just from a military perspective, but also has been optimising its methods of dissent detection and dissent suppression. .all for the glorious future of Chinese rule lol it'll be a fun few years coming up, that's for sure
