New York Times: Russia Banned From Winter Olympics by I.O.C.
LAUSANNE, Switzerland — Russia’s Olympic team has been barred from the 2018 Winter Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea. The country’s government officials are forbidden to attend, its flag will not be displayed at the opening ceremony and its anthem will not sound.
Any athletes from Russia who receive special dispensation to compete will do so as individuals wearing a neutral uniform, and the official record books will forever show that Russia won zero medals.
That was the punishment issued Tuesday to the proud sports juggernaut that has long used the Olympics as a show of global force but was exposed for systematic doping in previously unfathomable ways. The International Olympic Committee, after completing its own prolonged investigations that reiterated what had been known for more than a year, handed Russia penalties for doping so severe they were without precedent in Olympics history.

"The Russians were warned a long time ago to shape up. Whey they have not does not surprise me." The Russians are not doing anything that other countries and other world class athletes don't do. There's absolutely nothing they are doing that is any different from others.
This is why they did not "shape up." There was no reason for them to. Perhaps they thought common sense would prevail. They thought wrong.
Just who is behind singling the Russians out? I don't think it is the Americans as no one is going to act to ban Russia based upon what anything America would say. With that said I think it is a safe assumption that America will be blamed for it in the Russian press and among Russian officials.
Expect "blowback" from such a move. Banning Russia is a dishonorable act and a stain on the Olympics. If it were America being singled out, I would say the same thing. Now we Americans need to do the honorable thing and point out forcefully and follow up with action by stating loudly clearly and backing it up that we will not participate in the Olympics unless the Russians are allowed to participate and this injustice to Russia and their athletes is rectified forthwith. In other words, we will have an Olympics without either Russia or the United States.
While I hate to see the hard work of our athletes wasted by them not being allowed to participate, us refusing to participate until this injustice is rectified is really the only honorable way forward.
Hi wnu, first time posting long time reader. Your comment was kinda strange, could you elaborate? P.S. I think b poster is a russian troll, be carefull going back to russia if you question him to much. His english is just that little bit off. I mean heck im a stupid hillybilly and I can see the b.s. from here.LOL
Jeff Smith,
There are some institutions in Russia that just cannot change with the times. The Russian Olympic organisation is one of them. For them .... the use of enhancement drugs has been a given for so long that they just cannot wean themselves away from it. And even when warned .... repeatedly .... they are incapable of changing.
yo...Poster
I trained and fully intend to be in the Olympics as an American. You dislike? Don't watch me
But who's going to be the "Bad Guys" now? The Olympics used to be so much more fun to watch, now all anyone cares about is Curling...
Jeff,
My sentence structure is a bit off sometimes. You say you are a long time reader. Either you aren't really a long time reader or you are not a careful reader. I've explained a nunber of times why my sentence structure is sonetimes off.
I will explain again. For starters my eyesight is poor, I am very busy and am often multi-tasking, I carefully think through my thoughts before posting, I wish to post because much can be learned by doing so and having constructive dialogue, and no one pays me for this. Due to these factors sometimes sentence structure gets sacrificed. I am trying to do better.
When you accuse me of being a Russian troll you jump to unwarranted conclusions in the absence of all of the facts. I am an American, born, raised, and living in the United States. When supporting policies that have a chance to improve our relations with Russia, this puts me in the same position as a number of Americans.
WNU,
Substitute "America" and "American" for "Russia" and "Russian" and your sentrnce is equally accurate except for perhaps the last part. We haven't been "warned." I would be willing to wager that it's the same for every other nation fielding a competitive cintingent in terms of the "cheating,"
Why is Rusdia being singled out for essentially the same thing everyone else is doing. Essentialky the fans don't care. They want top performances. If "cheating" went away, performances would suffer as would revenue which would be bad for business.
In any event, rightly or wrongly the Russians are going to blame America for this. Blowback is to be expected and we look like hypocrites!!
Anonymos,
Congratulations on making the Olympic team!! I wish you much success!!
For the duration of this thread, I am going to assume you are in the minority of world ckass athletes who don't "cheat." In which case, your conscience is clean.
As for the others, this is something they will have to decide. To boycott on principle requires courage. I've always been impressed when people do the right thing in the face of tremendous opposition. This requires character. Few have such character. Frankly, if I had trained for and made the Olympics knowing this is very likely a once in a lifetime opportunity, I'm not sure I'd have the strength of character to boycott the games. As such, I couldn't blame anyone for not doing so. As stated, since you're "clean," this doesn't apply to you.
Without the Russian contingent the games will be tainted. The Russians are being banned for the same things everyone else does. As the Russians generally perform well in these games, the games are being deprived of some top performers. As such, viewership is going to suffer which means revenue and profits will suffer and as I've stated the Russians are going to blame the Americans for this resulting in major blowback. Remember the laws of sowing and reaping.
Will I watch? I will try to. Anytime I can watch athletes from my home country of the United States perform in games like this I try to do so.
My work schedule is likely to be very busy during this time. As such, the time I have to watch will likely be limited. Again, congratulations on making the Olympic team and good luck!!
