SIMI VALLEY, Calif (Reuters) - The U.S. agency tasked with protecting the country from missile attacks is scouting the West Coast for places to deploy new anti-missile defenses, two Congressmen said on Saturday, as North Korea’s missile tests raise concerns about how the United States would defend itself from an attack.

West Coast defenses would likely include Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) anti-ballistic missiles, similar to those deployed in South Korea to protect against a potential North Korean attack.

The accelerated pace of North Korea’s ballistic missile testing program in 2017 and the likelihood the North Korean military could hit the U.S. mainland with a nuclear payload in the next few years has raised the pressure on the United States government to build-up missile defenses.

On Wednesday, North Korea tested a new type of intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) that can fly over 13,000 km (8,080 miles), placing Washington within target range, South Korea said on Friday.

I would just like to point out the Chinese government is being stupid.

China & Russia test ASATs with less grief than the Americans. When the Americans test such a system, the usual suspects bleat about some treaty or another. These are the same perfidious, scurrilous unwashed _______s that bleat about the Pershing. while ignoring the SS20. Any marches against the SS20?

Your typical lib will cry THAAD does not work 99% to 100%) or does not work well enough. They'll say 80% or 90% is not good enough. They'll say that rate is not a deterrent. Of course they know the mind of a tyrant well enough to know what is or is not a deterrent.

So they libs will win and lose the THAAD argument. So people will gravitate to mid course interception which will cause further militarization of space. It is not like space was not going to be militarized. It will just speed up the process. It will also ensure that America has as many tests as the Chinese or Russians.

Congrats

The North Korean client state on a leash gambit certainly has been worth it.
