China Warship Sails Near Japan-Claimed Islands

BBC: China warship sails near Japan-controlled islands

Japan has summoned the Chinese ambassador in Tokyo, after a Chinese frigate sailed near disputed islands in the East China Sea.

A foreign submarine was also spotted near the islands on Wednesday and Thursday, although its nationality was not clear, Japan's military said.

Japan controls the uninhabited Senkaku islands, which China also claims under the name Diaoyu islands.

The tiny islands are a frequent flashpoint between the two countries.

They are prized because they are close to key shipping lanes, offer rich fishing grounds and lie near potential oil and gas reserves.

WNU Editor: I am willing to bet that it is only a matter of time before the Chinese will land troops on one of these small islands .... and they are not going to leave.

Probing and gradualism. China is getting increasingly more proficient at this. The more powerful it becomes, the more audacity it will have and the less recourse the West will have in impeding this.

If Japan wants these islands, are they going to respond to this? If not, then as they say and at the risk of being rude and crude SDTFU! DO NOT expect the Americans to enforce or defend Japanese territorial claims.

Oh and Japan is not part of the "west." For what this is worth and as I've explained before, the "west" is not some monolithic entity. Each of these countries have their own unique cultures and interests. To stubbornly try and link them together in such a fashion is only going to create even more problems than we already have.

Japan is part of it. The west is a synonym for democracies and free countries

Who's not "the west": Russia, Iran, North Korea, China

At best, the "west" is inconsistent in its application of and support for democracy and freedom. Examples are numerous. Hypocrites do not need to lecture others and those who live in glass houses do not need to throw stones.

I and many others think of "west" as having a Judeo-Christian heritage. There isn't even substantive agreement in just what the "west" is.

Now back to the topic of the post. If Japan wants those islands, FIGHT FOR THEM!! DO NOT, expect the United States to enforce Japanese territorial claims!!

At pacifustleast Japan seems to be moving in the direction of FINALLY scrapping their antiquated pacifist constitution. This should've been done about 30 years ago. Better late than never.

Take a seat B. Poster. You understood what the term meant in terms of those nation states and institutions that comprise the "West" that I had been referring to. I could nit pick what you say half the time here as well, but its not productive to the main points of the real conversation that we are trying to have, and just causes petty quarrel.
