Russian Reaction To The U.S. Treasury Sanctions List

CBS: Russia reacts to U.S. government's not-too-shocking list of shame

MOSCOW -- The U.S. State Department announced Monday evening that new sanctions will not be imposed against a list of prominent Russian figures with close ties to Vladimir Putin.

The Treasury Department published the list of more than 200 political players and "oligarchs" late Monday night under mandate of a U.S. law aimed at punishing Russia for meddling in the U.S. election and other transgressions.

Reacting to the list on Tuesday, Putin called its publication an "unfriendly act," and warned that it would further complicate already-strained U.S.-Russian relations.

WNU Editor: This pretty well sums up the "public reaction" from Russia's elites .... Russia's elite think the US “oligarchs list” is hilarious (Quartz). There are also many reports that the U.S. sanctions list is causing laughter around the world. But privately ... they are worried, and the main reason is because of this .... Publication of Russia 'oligarch list' may affect investors: group (Reuters). What's my take. This sanctions threat is making the Russians circle the wagons .... and politically speaking .... will only mean Russian President Putin will receive a bigger margin of victory when Russians go to the polls to elect a President in March. As to the U.S. Treasury Department's list .... IMHO there are some businessmen on that list who do not deserve to be there. And while there is all this bravado in Moscow that this list means nothing .... I disagree .... just the threat that it gives is going to hurt business and trade with Russia. And IMHO .... that is nothing to laugh at.
