CNN: Syrian army vows to eject US troops

Washington (CNN)Troops allied with Syria's President Bashar al-Assad are determined to "end the presence of the US" in the country, Syria's state-run news agency, SANA, said Monday, citing an official at the regime's Foreign Ministry.

The official told SANA that the Assad-aligned Syrian Arab Army would thwart the "conspiracy, end the presence of the US, its agents and tools in Syria, establish full control over the entire Syrian territory and preserve the country's sovereignty."

The US maintains some 2,000 troops in Syria and has said its forces will continue to back local anti-ISIS forces there until the extremist group is defeated and the area is stabilized.

The Syrian statement comes after the US-led coalition fighting ISIS announced plans Sunday to boost border security in the region, a move that Syrian and Turkish officials have said would destabilize the region.

I disagree, Jac ..

Look I'm pro US, but I just don't see a strong enough partner they can back. Sure, the Kurds are tough as nails and I respect them as fighters. ..but what's your plan here? The Assad regime will survive because of Russia. Then they have Iran as well. Unless you're willing to commit to massive casualties on the Iranian and Russian side this war cannot be won. And while I hate Assad for what he did to civilians, I'm not OK with killing Russians. We have to be ready to make lasting peace with Russia after Putin is gone and that will be in less than 5 years. We can't kill Russians and expect them to embrace us. Just cannot happen. I want to help the Syrians, but world peace is at stake. If Russia wants to keep a mass murderer in charge, he will remain in charge. That's the dirty truth. Because no one wants a cold war or worse again. That's the reality. And as bitter as it is, we will have to accept it unless the US comes up with a plan that avoids killing Russians. And I just don't see that. I might be wrong, Jack, I don't follow Syria closely...I just don't see any way forward. And we have to also ask ourselves, if living under assad wouldn't be better (even if he's a murderer) than keep fighting and see civilians die? Unless we hear from the civilians in a convincing manner that shows there's a majority speaking with one voice, led by "moderates", we can't do much, can't even arm them because of potential blowback. Love Obama, classy guy, but he and his failed red line is what invited Russia in there. You cannot back down or hesitate on the world stage. It emboldened Iran and Russia and this is the outcome. Just shows you how difficult a president's life is. ..can f*ck up an entire country through a comment. It also brought the 12 months or so during which Putin was hailed by many pundits as this great strategist, remember? That was right at that time of the red line mistake or shortly after when he swept in. Disappointing, and terrible to some Syrian civilians, but we just cannot kill Russians over this. We don't even know if who we back is ultimately right for this country, you know? If Russians were Nazis that would be another thing. But they are not. They just got a president who wreaks havoc around the middle east and we cannot honestly say the US doesn't do the same. So yeah, we all f*cked up Syria. All of us. Time to own up to the mess in one way or another and bring peace to this country, even if that means the Assad regime can temporarily stay. If you got a plan I'm happy to listen :)
