The Fake News Awards, those going to the most corrupt & biased of the Mainstream Media, will be presented to the losers on Wednesday, January 17th, rather than this coming Monday. The interest in, and importance of, these awards is far greater than anyone could have anticipated!— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) January 7, 2018
The Hill: Trump named top global 'press oppressor'
The Committee to Protect Journalists named President Trump as the winner of its “Overall Achievement in Undermining Global Press Freedom” award in its “Press Oppressors” awards Monday.
The committee released a list of top global press oppressors on Monday in response to Trump’s upcoming “fake news” awards, giving Trump the top honor.
“While previous U.S. presidents have each criticized the press to some degree, they have also made public commitments to uphold its essential role in democracy, at home and abroad,” the committee wrote.
“Trump, by contrast, has consistently undermined domestic news outlets and declined to publicly raise freedom of the press with repressive leaders such as Xi [Jinping], [Recep Tayyip] Erdoğan, and [Abdel Fattah al-]Sisi.”

The president of the US has a lot of power, and we've seen instances where Trump or his team members (white house press secretaries etc) have used their influence to shame reports on live TV. Shaming a reporter is not acceptable. His office just cannot do that. Even if they might be right sometimes (we all know that there has been bias in the press corps, I acknowledge that, but, the press needs to operate freely and cannot be intimidated by such a powerful office)
But, WNU, on the bottom line I agree.. I think they want to use all their power to keep Trump in check and not let him go any further. While there are people regularly put in prison in Egypt and China and Turkey and Iran for speaking out against the regime, it is a whole other thing if this were to happen in the US! We would see a very dark time around the globe - and it just cannot be allowed. Therefore, while I do agree with you, I totally understand where they are coming from. This is a fight for global freedom, and President Trump has really hurt the standing of the press (BUT, he has also helped, as they have to be kept accountable.. the likes of CNN are just crazy today and resemble exactly what fox did.. if both major networks lie like that, no wonder there's such deep divide in the states)
True that WNU!! To all the honest hardworking journo's out there- keep up the unbiased professional reporting. Life as we know now depends on it
LOL
Anonymous # 1,
So what you are suggesting in your first paragraph is that POTUS should do nothing when slandered and out right lies are told about him? Frankly, it does well to shame a liar from time to time. They need to be held accountable. As for Fox News, there is plenty of oversight elsewhere to keep them in check. As such, it is probably unnecessary for POTUS to shame them if they get something in error due an outright lie. In the case of CNN and others, there is no other check on them. We cannot expect a person to do nothing when they are slandered and things are made up about them.
Naming Trump as the top press oppressor costs nothing and has huge profit potential. To name leaders of any of the various countries the editor mentions carries with it huge downside risk with little to no upside potential.
Biased journalism..... which constitutes most of the news organizations in the USA...is not journalism, it’s political propaganda. The president has every right to suppress liberal/ demoncratic propaganda. It’s not journalism!
