The U.S. Treasury has announced new sanctions against Russian and Ukrainian citizens involved in the Russian annexation of Crimea, barring them from doing business with Americans and freezing any assets they hold under U.S. jurisdiction.
"The U.S. government is committed to maintaining the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine and to targeting those who attempt to undermine the Minsk agreement," Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said Friday, referring to the agreement under which Russia and Ukraine are obligated to support a cease-fire, withdraw heavy weapons, and support electoral reform.

"These new sanctions only reinforce his support." Exactly!!
As I recall when the coup happened that overthrew the Ukrainian government that was non hostile to Russia and replaced it with a hostile one, there was a nascent opposition to Putin. By siding with the coup the US and the "west" cut the legs out from under this nascent opposition.
Sanctions will not work, they only reinforce Putin's support, and all pretty much ensure that when Putin finally does retire that his successor will be at least as hostile to America and probably more so than Putin is. By imposing sanctions the US has dug itself a very deep hole. When one is in a hole, the best thing they can do is to STOP DIGGING!!
How can Trump be a Putin's puppet, when there have been a one round of sanction after another?
Maybe the NYT or Guardian can explain the cognitive dissonance.
Never thought I see the day coming that I'm in agreement with BPoster and Aizino with regards to sanctions.
It is the wrong way.
It targets innocent Russians.
Russians - and I mean the regular guys on the street - are not or enemies. No mechanism or weapon should be used to target them. Plus they wouldn't believe anything we say anyways. Our whole pa is a joke-accusing everyone and everything of the most outrageous stuff including treason, without a shred of evidence. How can we criticise Putin when we have networks like CNN just making stuff up?
The sanctions should be stopped. Replace them with something that hurts the politicians, not the people. It's not their fault!
