Ralph Peters, New York Post: Russians attacked American troops on Putin’s orders
It was inevitable. Russian “mercenaries” attacked a forward base in Syria where they knew American advisors were stationed. It was a test. And our military passed.
Let’s hope the administration passes, too.
The most important thing about this attack on our troops is that it couldn’t have happened without Vladimir Putin’s personal approval. Nye vozmozhno.
The core of the attacking force came from the Wagner Group, Russia’s version of the American thugs who worked for the company formerly known as Blackwater. But while the media refers to the Russians as mercenaries, the Wagner Group functions as an auxiliary of the Russian military — it previously gave command performances in Crimea and eastern Ukraine. It exists to give Moscow (barely) plausible deniability.

WNU Editor: Ralph Peters is wrong. Russians go to the polls next month. The last thing that Russian President Putin wants to do right now is to rock the boat by launching a military strike against U.S. forces in Syria. There is no upside for him to order such an attack .... but there is definitely a lot of downside. So who order the attack? The decision to launch this attack involving Russian mercenaries could only come from the Russian company that manages these mercenaries. Did they decide to join this Iranian-backed Syrian military unit at the last moment? Did they see an opportunity to take an important oil field? Or did the Syrians/Iranians convince them that this was a good operation and they said .... what the heck. Either way it was a slaughter, and I am sure there are a lot of upset people right now. But for now .... everyone wants this story to go away.
Update: Why am I not surprised .... Neither Kremlin nor Pentagon confirm reports of alleged Russian losses to US strike in Syria (RT).

Yes, I think they do want it to "go away." As for the Americans, we don't want the Russian reprisal. Best not to "rock the boat." As for Mr. Putin, he's focused on an election. Best not to "rock the boat."
While we cannot "know" the outcome without the fight actually taking place, I'm pretty sure had this been a fight with actual Russian troops and not "mercenaries" the outcome would not have been tnis one-sided though we might have "won."
I am inclined to put a great deal of emphasis on our recent warning to Putin of a few weeks ago and his thanking Trump for doing so concerning a terrorist attack that the Russians were able to thwart in Russia. This incident, to me, stands head and shoulders above all the other articles seen almost daily in the media. I think that when all is said and done we and them Russkis are in the same boat regarding terrorism, ISIS, and who knows what other ten man "brigades, armies, divisions" of these various goofy muz-lumz running around in the mid east. We have our differences but I like to think that when the chips are down that they can count on us to give them the goods on preventing attacks on their country as I feel they would do for us.
I do not think the Russians are behind this incident and am inclined to give Putin more credit than to give the go order for this.
Mercenaries getting a paycheck from Syria, I would buy. Still, it's hard to believe assuming the alleged Russian contractors wouldn't be blind about our presence at the site.

RP has gone off the edge as a Russia or frankly anything watcher.
I do like the Czar Putin label.
They fueled up and moved out with someone"s approval fuel and ammo.
jimbrown,
"They fueled up and moved out with someone"s approval fuel and ammo."
Exactly. Putin seems to have an internal discipline problem with these guys as far as who do they answer to and in this case I don't think it was Putin. There is going to be hell to pay internally for this.
Mercenaries or regular soldiers dressed in nonuniforms? The real question: if mercenaries, who is paying them?
Ralph Peters never knows as much as he claims to know, which is why
I stopped paying attention to him. The fact is, we still have very little verifiable information as to what happened, why this force, whatever it was, came into contact with the SDF, how and why the SDF called in the US, why the US air bombardment was so vicious and intense and who were those killed. I'm suspicious of these claims of 200 Russian mercenaries being killed because one of main sources for them is this group Conflict Intelligence Team, which seems to be closely connected to Mikhail Khordokovsky who is about as anti-Putin as anyone can get, making ulterior motives for these claims a distinct possibility.
