Newsweek: Pentagon Takes Down Nuclear Report After Labeling Taiwan as Part of China
The Defense Department was forced to issue a correction of its Nuclear Posture Review after mistakenly labeling Taiwan as part of mainland China in the report.
When asked by The Japan Times on Saturday why the islands of Taiwan were colored in with the Chinese flag in some pages of the Nuclear Posture Review, the Pentagon admitted it had made a mistake and took down the report for several hours.
“There was an error printed in the 2018 Nuclear Posture Review,” a Pentagon spokesperson told the Times late Saturday.

Taiwan is a part of China. Eventually it will be fornalized. There's probably little to nothing we can do to prevent this except wasting precious resources and lives in an ultinately futile effort to preveny it. I may be incorrect but based upon a careful analysis this appears to me to be the case.
When this made it into the original report, it was likely part of a draft and was accidently not removed from the final product. By recognizing that Tawain is a part of China it appears that someone, at least in the draft phase, was thinking strategically in ways that actually might advance American interests.
Unfortunately in DC strategic thinking is often not allowed and is often substituted for ideology. Furthermore expect the person/people who put this in the original draft to be singled for special punishment with the editor/editors who failed to remove this part receiving lesser punishnents. Such actions further discourage strategic thinking.
If Tawain wishes to be independent, I would suggest the following: 1.) Invent something, a process or something only they can provide that is valuable and threatening them via invasion or otherwise means a huge risk of disruption of the supply of this needed item. 2.) Develop their defense posture in such a way that an invasion of their homeland would be so pyric that China or anyone would not consider it.
