South China Morning Post: Rodrigo Duterte wants to create ‘balance’ by sending troops to China for training
Philippine president’s counterterrorism proposal comes amid concern over growing risk of ‘miscalculation’ and conflict in South China Sea.
Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte said he wants to send troops to China for training to combat terrorism, despite worries resurfacing over Beijing’s build-up in the contested South China Sea.
Duterte said there was a need to “balance” the training of Filipino soldiers, who have a strong bond with the US military, The Philippine Star reported.
“Most of the Filipino soldiers … would immediately choose America. They have forged such a bond,” Duterte was quoted as saying on Monday during an event marking the 20th anniversary of the Chinese-Filipino Business Club in Manila.
“My suggestion is the next batch should go directly to China ... so there would be a balance,” he said. “I’m sure there is an academy there to train good professional Chinese soldiers. Maybe China can accommodate them also and let them ... not really fight the Americans, but terrorism.”

Duterte was (is) a communist...what a surprise.
Not a communist, just greedy for material things including money.
All of you are looking to Duterte as NOT a Lackey of the US. Why would he fight China when the US itself cannot and WILL NOT protect the Philippines not withstanding its treaty obligations. This was confirmed by the US ambassador himself when Duterte was newly elected President. So is it any wonder why he doesn't want to cozy up to the US?
If Duterte was such a threat to democracy why wouldn't the CIA assassinate him outright? Simple, because by killing him, all Filipinos would consider the US as the suspect and mastermind of the killing, would push the Philippines further to China and Russia and would alienate any and all US-sponsored proxies and interests. The Philippines is entering a period where it wants to have an independent foreign policy, unburdened by any influence (whether imagined or otherwise), by US interests. My advise is to let him be. The Philippines will remain a strong US ally, Duterte notwithstanding. Any attempt to influence, isolate, humiliate or irritate him only endears him more to his people and makes the US lose any more influence in the people as it is. After 6 years his term expires and a new president will be sworn in. I suggest you start looking for winners to groom.

US used to be an ally of Philippines, but after Corazon Aquino staged her "people power" coup, and threw the US military bases out, Philippines has struggled ever since. Philippine leaders are and will always be corrupt.
