Turkey's foreign minister has warned the country is ready to battle Bashar al-Assad's troops in northern Syria after Damascus agreed to support Kurdish fighters.

Mevlut Cavusoglu warned that 'no-one can stop us' as it was announced that pro-Syrian government forces will begin entering the Kurdish enclave of Afrin 'within hours'.

Syrian state media said Assad's forces will 'bolster' local forces in confronting Turkish 'aggression'. This suggested the Syrian government and Kurdish fighters - a militia known as YPG militia - have struck a deal aimed at repelling an ongoing Turkish offensive on the area.

Turkey has the technological edge in this, but will the people support it after the bodies of their soldiers starts to pile up? Or will Erdogan crush it as usual with more arrests?

Turkey really is at a critical point now.

Like the Soviets before WW2, Turkey gutted its armed forces after the supposed coup attempt several years back. From what I can tell, they are not doing all that well against the ypg, have gained little territory in the Afrin area. They may eventually win but like you said may pay a heavy price in blood and treasury.

Assad checks with the Russians before brushing his teeth. My guess the Russians hope to become indispensable to Turkey to manage this Kurd problem Erdogan keeps inflaming.
All part of the grand plan to turn Turkey pliant to Russian needs in that region. Basically ensure Erdogan doesn’t brush his teeth without checking in with the Russians.
