Harold Hutchison, We Are The Mighty: Why China will soon have a secret base in Afghanistan

Afghanistan has seen a lot of fighting since the Soviet invasion in December 1979. The Soviets ended up building bases in the war-torn country. So did the United States, which has been in Afghanistan since October 2001. Now, the Chinese Communists are reportedly building a base in northeastern Afghanistan, giving them a foothold in Central Asia.

According to a report by Eurasianet.org, the base is being built for the Afghan Armed Forces. Both Chinese and Afghan sources denied these reports, but Fergana News, which broke the story originally, confirmed that the base is being built in the northeastern Afghan province of Badakhshan, which borders Tajikistan. On the other side of Tajikistan, further to the east, is the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region of the People’s Republic of China.

This is an encouraging sign. We also see that US forces attacked anti-Chinese forces as well. These are small steps in the right direction and we should be looking for more areas where we can cooperate with China. "Focused and stable" countries and people look for ways they can cooperate with and work with those in high and important positions. It helps one to advance their interests and helps ensure that when they need assistance they have powerful allies. "Focused and stable" countries and people do not go around looking for fights and picking fights with those who are powerful. Such behavior is at best a losing proposition and at worst a literal dead end. Such are not the actions of "focused and stable" countries and people.

Exactly..it's a testing ground for weapons. That's all it is now. China joining the party not for humanitarian reasons. They need fighting experience. They too want to test their weapons and soldiers on live targets/enemies. No one is going to miss a few thousand Taliban here and there or ask questions about use of weapon system xyz. In a few decades we'll all be like "oh I didn't know that's what all those militaries did there"....really?
