Canada To Deploy Troops To Mali

CBC: Canada sending 6 helicopters to help UN mission in Mali

How many Canadian support personnel will be sent to African country remains unclear

Canada will send up to six helicopters and as many as 250 aircrew and troops to the troubled West African nation of Mali this summer, the Liberal government confirmed Monday.

Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan and Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland made the announcement in the foyer of the House of Commons, providing little more in the way of clarity than the broad aspects of the mission that were leaked last week.

They did reveal that Canada's year-long commitment will involve two CH-147 Chinook helicopters for medical evacuations and logistical support and four CH-146 Griffon helicopters for armed escorts.

WNU Editor: This blog has been covering the conflict in Mali for years. This is not a peacekeeping mission .... this is a warzone that Canadian troops are entering. I can only hope that the government and the public are fully aware on how dangerous this deployment/mission really is, and it should definitely not be because of this .... Canada’s Mali mission will emphasize deployment of female peacekeepers (Toronto Star).

One of the reasons I and many Americans have always admired and looked up to Canada is because the Canadian government generally refrains from doing stupud sh!t like this. In contrast, stupid sh!t like this and worse is par for the course for the US government.

I trust this is a one off for Canada and this will not become the norm. The trouble with the US government is its leaders often make their decisions based on ideolgy. Such people are easily manipulated by foreign powers in any number of ways.

A key goal of the Trump Administration needs to be to trim down our alliances to only those that add value to us. Do they enhance our national security? Do they help us grow our economy? I estimate 90 to 95% of these "allies" and foreign military deployments can and should be eliminated fairly quickly.

Candidate Trump did call out countries like South Korea, Japan, and NATO by name during the ampaign. As such, I think he and his team get this on some level.

This has a great deal to do with why he was elected. His opponent only offered more of the status quo which was failing miserably and many of us understood continuing it was going to be the death of us all. As such, there was little option but to take a chance on the unknown. A shot in the dark, if you will.
