Kremlin Reacts To Today's Mass Expulsion Of Russian Diplomats From The U.S., Canada, And Over A Dozen EU Nations

TASS: Kremlin: Response to diplomats’ expulsion from US will be based on reciprocity principle

The Kremlin spokesman has commented on a Bloomberg report that President Donald Trump decided to expel dozens of Russian diplomats from the US over Skripal case

MOSCOW, March 26. /TASS/. Moscow has received no formal notification from Washington regarding the possible expulsion of its diplomats, but, if the US makes such a decision, Russia’s response will be based on the reciprocity principle, Russian Presidential Spokesman Dmitry Peskov said commenting on a Bloomberg report that President Donald Trump decided to expel dozens of Russian diplomats from the US over the case of former Russian military intelligence Colonel Sergei Skripal.

WNU Editor: I am sure that the Kremlin had hoped that this issue would have died down by now .... but clearly this is not the case. I expect Russia to expel U.S. and EU diplomats in the coming days, but it is going to be a muted response.

For the US side it is 95 Russians expelled and two consulates closed. The Russians have yet to respond to the combined Obama, Trump actions.

So I expect the Russians to expel 95 Americans and close two American consulates.

What is of interest to me is how he responds to the EU actions. They seem minor and pro forma. Why not ignore the 4 from Germany and France and deal with the others in the normal fashion?

WNU, this is not just an "issue" that can "die down", like some embarrassing news item, I'm afraid. (And TBH, you've treated this quite lightly as well, so far, which is unlike you given your usual acumen about key events.) The consensus across the West is that this has been a chemical weapons attack on civilians on NATO soil. Not even Hitler used chemical weapons even though he had them (sorry to bring up H, but it is relevant because it might help non-Westerners understand the psychological impact on the West). Evidently, Kremlin grossly miscalculated; evidently, for them it's not a big deal - indeed, it's just an "issue" that (in their minds) should just "die down" - why all the fuss, right? But I assure you: this has changed *everything*, way more than Crimea, in my opinion.
Regards.

I do not know where you live, but a lot of people here in western Europe, are very sceptical about the claims that the Russians did this.

No evidence has been shown and the accusations came within hours of the alleged atack, which makes it hard to believe any serious investigation had been conducted.

a lot of people in western Europe...the butcher at my store, the postman, and my gas station attendant...otherwise those who study such things note that Russia sides with Assad and he is known to have such things and has used them...

Anonymous said...

Very scientific analys ha ha, all major powers have access to a myriad of legal and illegal weapons to kill someone with. The gas in question is supposedly so special that only geniuses in Russia can make it. Why no decent chemists in other countries are not able to make it beats me.

making a weapon is not the same thing as using it...we know Assad used poison on his own people prior to our involvement. We then saw more used during the current warfare...seems a good guess that he who has it and has used it earlier is using it again...unless you have evidence otherwise

Yeah and 9/11 was an inside job, and MH17 was likewise a set-up, Assad never used chemical weapons (has Kremlin ever admitted it?) on and on. These wicked Westerners, always up to the most revolting conspiracies, including the killing of their own people...and for what?... just to have a "reason" to do something in foreign policy. Right? :) Oh and of course, saintly Putin regime would never do anything remotely dodgy.

Seriously, you people, whether trolls or actual "believers" in Moscow's propaganda...You are just pathetic. You should just listen to yourselves. You think that if the Russian mind an entertain such insane conspiracies, because the Govt is all-powerful in Russia and you know it CAN do it if it wants to, you think that it's the same in the West, in an accountable democracy (with all their faults)?

Sad, sad people... But I guess when everything else is taken from you; when you become despised by the civilised world and have to fall back on friends such as Assad or Erdogan; when to be Russian is understood, in the 21st century, to be an "Eurasian" barbarian; when no one wants you and thinks you a nation of drunkards, gangsters and killers; when everyone only fears you for your brute force rather than admire you for any sort of ennobling qualities; when you have ended up in the gutter of the modern world in every way, and been disgraced in every quarter of international life, from foreign policy to sport (how's the doping going?), and become the pariah that only hangs out with the other outcasts, losers and rejects -- well...I guess at that point you NEED to start looking for someone else to blame. It MUST all be a conspiracy, right? It cannot be true, it cannot be true that this is really the true face and nature of Russia of today under the current regime? It must be the work of others, always out to get you, always undermining you. Oh, the hypocrisy. Oh, the sadness of it all. Pathetic.

Now, I'm almost certain WNU will not allow this comment to pass through, I know he'll find it hitting quite close to home. But WNU, you know I'm also right in many ways. Russia could be such a flourishing, successful country. Alas, it will likely never be, as the 4-term (5, counting Medvedev) rule of one man will have defaced and crippled this great nation, and corrupted its heart and mind.

All the best to you all.

Until I do have time for a more detailed response which may be awhile due to my work and family situation, Anonymous 3 sums it up quite well. There seems no way a serious investigation could have been conducted. To say one could have conducted a thorough investigation so quickly, it somewhat like saying someone has run a 4 minute marathon.

At this point, under normal detective work the two lead theories would be 1.)a stupid person or people in the Russian acting in such a way because they thought Putin would be please. As the editor has correctly observed, there are plenty of stupid people in the world or 2.) a Putin enemy.

Either way we could have a serious problem that is even bigger than we may have thought. This means that these weapons stockpiles and/or the knowhow on these things may not be as secure as we might have thought. A thorough investigation could have revealed all of this and, it turns out that Putin is responsible, we still could have acted accordingly.

For what its worth, I don't think this is "conspiracy" on the part of "western" leaders. I think it is a case of preconceived biases getting in the way of critical thinking. I think all humans are susceptible to this on some level.

A bit off topic but this is different from the Mueller Commission. The Mueller Commission is essentially a fishing expedition set up to go on a never ending quest to hunt for crimes not discovered rather than an investigation and potential prosecution of actual crimes. Here actual crimes have been committed and definitely need to be investigated.

Anon (the last one),

If time is permitting, I will respond in more detail to what you posted. You did cover allot of ground. I find this often occurs when one does not have a good argument for the case at hand. they must throw out a bunch of things hoping something sticks.

I will address very briefly one of these. You mention the doping by Russian Olympic athletes. This is prevalent among world class athletes. The Russians weren't doing anything here that we (Americans), British, German, French, or pick your world class athletes from whatever country you wish aren't doing. I find it peculiar and disturbing that, for whatever reason, they were singled out. The concept of sewing and reaping may apply here especially if we were a driving force behind this. Someday someone may do something like that to us.

23 nations? Aren't they primarily "western" in leaning. How many are there in the world. According to Google there are 195. Furthermore unless I missed it the 23 don't represent the big countries of China or India. Very respectfully this hardly looks like a world wide consensus at this time.

At least I am pleased you did not conclude as someone on another thread appears to that these nations are going along only because America wants them to.:-) At least I think we would agree that such a thing is ridiculous non sense.:-) Since family does come first, got to go for now. Hope to chat latter.:-)

US diplomats don't give a f*** if they are expelled from cold-ass ugly Russia. They are HAPPY to go home. And the US sucks at personal intelligence anyways. For Russia it's different. Their diplomats LOVE living in Europe and the US. Their children love being there. Their asses are now hauled back to cold Russia. They now will have to take care of mafia issues over there again. No one who lived in Europe or US wants to go back to Russia. They will cry about it to Putin 60-100x over.

The Skripal investigation also drew on other, pre-existing British intelligence in this space.

This has nothing to do with Assad, he couldn't rob a 7/11 without getting caught.
