Reuters: Polish lawmaker: due reparations from Germany could stand at $850 billion

WARSAW (Reuters) - Warsaw has the right to demand reparations from Germany potentially worth $850 billion for destroyed property and people killed during World War Two, the politician in charge of reparations said on Friday.

The Polish ruling Law and Justice party (PiS) has revived the issue of war reparations at a time when Israeli politicians accuse it of attempting to whitewash the role of Poles in German war crimes against Jews during the conflict.

German parliamentary legal experts said last year that Warsaw had no right to demand reparations.

The Polish government stopped short of making a direct claim to Germany but the issue could lead to tensions between the two EU governments, analysts say. Germany is Poland’s largest trade partner and Poland is the biggest recipient of EU aid.

70+ years later?
I do think that Germany owes them something beyond apologies though. And Germany certainly could afford a few billion. Why not? 750 billion does sound a bit much but then again they certainly - together with the Russians - messed up their country. But let me guess how much Russia would pay: 0

Fazman,

Well said sir!! I will need to remember that one.

Anon,

You are likely correct. When Poland was part of the eastern bloc Russia probably did f'ck it up. Unlike Germany to try and request money from Russia will likely result in a cost. While the Germans aren't paying any more, makkng the request cost nothing and it's a great publicity stunt!!

Russia invaded 1/2 the country.

They also murdered 22,000 Polish officers.

Perhaps murder is a bit strong of a word to use. What was done was just commonplace & 'good' Marxist practice.

Germany (thankfully) is not like Russia. When 20-25 million people died under Stalin, no one cared / said much. When 6 million died under Hitler, Germans to this day apologise and are branded as evil people. To this day, when you go to Berlin, you'll be actively reminded of errors and failings in the past. Germany is a unique country in that they truly try to improve and learn. Try finding the same learnings in Russia. You'll get thrown in jail if you promote any such thinking. That's why I like Germans better. Even Japan has not lived up to the same standard as Germany

The Soviets were either smarter than the Germans or had more time to cover up their crematoriums.

Jay,

It is amazing that a poorly educated Canadian such as yourself could be so concerned about America, when your own country has hit one Hell of a rough patch.

Trudeau's cosplay, cultural appropriation and misuse of clothing is truly amazing.

Trudeau is Canada's Borat. Sad thing is that Borat was a fictional character in an British-American movie. The Canadian Borat, Trudeau, is a bumbling idiot that you probably voted for.
