Reuters: Putin, before vote, says he'd reverse Soviet collapse if he could: agencies

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Friday he would reverse the collapse of the Soviet Union if he had a chance to alter modern Russian history, news agencies reported.

Putin made the comments, likely to strike a chord with millions of nostalgic older Russians, weeks before a March 18 election that polls show he should win comfortably.

Fielding quick-fire questions from supporters in Russia's European enclave of Kaliningrad, Putin was asked what Russian historical event he would like to change.

"The collapse of the Soviet Union," Putin immediately shot back.

Putin, who served in the KGB in the Soviet era, called the 1991 Soviet fall the "greatest geopolitical catastrophe" of the twentieth century in a 2005 speech and has used the Soviet Union's World War Two defeat of Nazi Germany to stir patriotism and help create a new sense of Russian identity.

I really believe Putin is smarter than many give him credit for. He knows all this bluster gets the right in the US into a frothing flap. The Soviet Warsaw pact. Really? I think not, who needs all the problems. Eastern Ukraine, yes. Finlandize Estonia, yes. Got the Crimea and will soon have bases in Syria that are of a serious nature.

Meanwhile the US spins around all over the place. State has no idea who they are supporting in Syria. Europe is starting to realize Trump is an erratic liability, sliding into irrelevance as far as NATO is concerned. The only slight movement in countering China by courting Viet Nam almost seems like luck more than anything else.

And Russia waits and lets the game come to them.

Yeah much more fun when people dope and rob honest athletes of their medals. .Russian mafia at its best..true Olympic spirit.. somehow with no doping Norway and Germany got most gold medals. .Russia wasn't even close despite that it was winter games lol even all their separate entries combined who went as individual athletes were really really disappointing without that governmental backed doping

Lol in what world do you live?

Russian population is shrinking. Russia is no longer a super power (culturally, economically, politically)..nearly completely isolated. .only military might left is their nukes. .that's why they double down on it. ..they've long lost air supremacy. ..we talk bad about the US military (and it has its own weaknesses)..but Russia omg.. saw what happened to them 2 weeks ago? 200:0..despite element of surprise and being attacker lol
Also lost and got embarrassed at Olympics. Russia needs to defend largest territory on earth against neighbours that dwarf it by all measures. .India and China. .Russia looses the AI race. .shall I go on, honestly? Russia''s GDP is the size of Italy. Italy is not a significant EU member even. Lol Russia Russia. .yeah right..putin just makes noise like a toddler so we pay attention and think Russia matters. It hasn't. They just kill people to stay relevant. And that's putin..the guy you admire. If Russia doesn't make friends with the west. .who will be on its side? China will come for its resources in 20-30 years to feed its 2bn people while Russia is expected to be at 80 million then, far behind technologically, aged and with many many enemies Putin unnecessarily made.

Russia. ..phh

I love Russians. But not Putin..he's destroying Russia and gets into debt to finance Syria

Wnu , what is your comment on Putin remarks ? Could he have done is? Prevented USSR from collapse

Anon,
He could not have prevented it.
The other republics wanted their independence, and the sentiment within Russia itself was to let them go.
The only way he could have kept the Soviet Union together was to do the same thing that made the Soviet Union in the first place. Use force to keep everyone in line. But if they did that, the whole thing would have ended up like Yugoslavia .... but worse, and with thousands of nukes all over the place.
