Bill Gertz, Asia Times: US tailors forces to deter growing Chinese nuclear threat

The Pentagon's Nuclear Posture Review outlines a new 'tailored deterrence' policy that seeks to persuade Chinese leaders to avoid miscalculations – provocative action in the South China Sea, or hostile activity related to Taiwan or Japan – that could escalate into war.

Russia’s leader Vladimir Putin unveiled several new nuclear weapons last week in a replay of the Cold War. China, meanwhile, is continuing a similar buildup of high-technology strategic nuclear forces that remains largely hidden from view.

Chinese secrecy about its nuclear forces and their use was a major theme of the Pentagon’s recently completed Nuclear Posture Review that outlined a new “tailored deterrence” policy for China.

WNU Editor: For as long as I can remember China has always refused to engage in official discussions on its nuclear policies. This approach .... coupled with the U.S. keeping its options secret .... will probably continue in the years to come.
