Reuters: Amid Syria tensions, Russian jet flies low over French warship

PARIS (Reuters) - A Russian warplane this weekend flew over a French warship at low altitude in the eastern Mediterranean, a deliberate breach of international regulations, a French naval source said on Tuesday.

The incident, first reported by Le Point magazine, comes as tensions mount between Russia and Western nations following a suspected chemical weapons attack in Syria on April 7. At least 60 people were killed in the attack, according to a Syrian relief agency.

France, the United States and their allies are considering a coordinated military response after accusing the Russia-backed Syrian government of being behind the attack. Damascus and Moscow have denied a chemical attack took place.

The weekly magazine said the Russian plane had flown over frigate Aquitaine over the weekend and was fully-armed.

WNU Editor: Unlike the previous story .... Reports That Russian Warplanes Are Buzzing The USS Donald Cook Off The Coast Of Syria Are False .... this one is true. Did the news media make a mistake when they first reported this story .... Russian Warplanes Are 'Harassing' The U.S. Destroyer USS Donald Cook Off The Coast Of Syria .... maybe.

They can circle and do their 1980s TopGun impression all they want. This is 2018 and the West would bitchslap Russia if it makes one more offensive provocation. Games are over.

Not so sure, Putin is prepared to take losses and casualties, the west not so much.

Actually in the skies over Syria when US and Russian fighters were both operating the Russian pilots were able to achieve a superior position over the Americans "pretty much every time." Essentially had this been actual combat American casualties and loss of planes would have been huge whereas Russian losses would have been minimal.

Unless we were there or otherwise had direct inside information we cannot "know" what happened. We can make reasonable inferences. The Russian pilots openly bragged about this, they were awarded medals, and they were publically honored by their leaders. If this were strictly a propaganda stunt, it would be counterproductive as those pilots who know the truth of what happened would be demoralized. In contrast, our people were rather bland when confronted with this. They seemed like someone who desperately wanted to cover up something. The body language and exuberance on the part of the Russians would have been very difficult to stage.

In addition, some commentators tried to explain this away by suggesting the Americans were ordered to stand down. Very respectfully, nonsense!! Ordering a pilot or soldier to essentially place his life in the hands of their adversary wouldn't end well and it'd be an absolute killer for morale. As such, the reasonable conclusion is our pilots got schooled over Syria? Did we learn anything?

Should this one get "hot" it may be the Americans (us) who get "bitch slapped" if we make "one more offensive provocation" and "the games are over" for us perhaps. O

At a minimum it would be wrong to blythly make the assumptions that anonymous makes. He/she may not be from America. I am. As such, it is my countrymen and women who are on the chopping block. I cannot make duch cavalier assumptions about American power relative to Russia especially when there is much evidence to suggest that such assumptions are patently false.

I think POTUS understands all of this. At least if we are to believe hjs critics, he thinks we should engage Russia, respect them, and trest them as equal. This dies NOT mean we are going to agree with them on everything nor will we sacrifice our intersts to make them haooy but it is clearly a better approach than trying to provoke them anywhere and everywhere for what often seems ni good reason.

There has been talk about denying POTUS access to intelligence. Is he being given good intel or is he being fed a myth of Ametican "superpower" status or America as "exceptional" nonsense? While his instincts normally would allow him to resist such nonsense, I have observed he seems to have trouble standins up to the generals.

WIth his enemies closing in around him is he being blackmailed into taking certain approaches that aren't warranted? I hope not.

No arguments or weak arguments are exposed for what they are then you resort to name calling such as "troll" or accusing me of sounding stupid. I explained my case rationally and everything is available on the internet and easily researched. In contrast, you have no good arguments. All you have left is insults and name calling.

"how stupid you sound...." If you were more specific about what sounded stupid, it might be possible to have a rational discussion on this. I am a little busy so I may not be able to get back to you today. It would have been more helpful had you have discussed the specific flaws in my post with your post rather than instantly resorting to insults.
