Japan Wants Lockheed To Build A F-22/F-35 Hybrid

Reuters: Exclusive: Lockheed Martin to propose stealthy hybrid of F-22 and F-35 for Japan - sources

TOKYO (Reuters) - U.S. defense contractor Lockheed Martin Corp plans to offer Japan a stealth fighter design based on its export-banned F-22 Raptor and advanced F-35 Lightning II aircraft, two sources said.

Lockheed has discussed the idea with Japanese defense ministry officials and will make a formal proposal in response to a Japanese request for information (RFI) after it receives permission from the U.S. government to offer the sensitive military technology, said the sources, who have direct knowledge of the proposal.

The decision on whether to release parts of the highly classified aircraft designs and software to help Japan stay ahead of Chinese advances will test President Donald Trump’s promise to overhaul his country’s arms export policy.

The proposed aircraft “would combine the F-22 and F-35 and could be superior to both of them,” said one of the sources.

It would make sense, USA is incapable of producing a new state of the art air superiority fighter. After the F22 program the US seemed to whitewash the technology which in turn meant no body of today is capable of recreating the tech let alone advancing from it. The US and its military developers are literally implementing failure points in the F35 program for lucrative maintenance contracts and their production of bare minimum spec planes is to maximise profits. This isnt the cold war where propaganda brings forth hardcore loyalist wanting to produce the best of the best to protect their nation. These are companies of capitalism where heads of departments are proceeding from 50+ years of constant cost reductions and profit maximisation.

Agree with your points about capitalism and likely corruption and/or incompetence running wild in these programs..hence my point: is Japan crazy going for "more of the same"? It might be a different model number but the same people and machinery behind the scenes. The pentagon must get this under control. Russia might have a comparatively tiny GDP, but their money gets them further. It would be good to see the bonuses of people involved in these F35 overruns
