Business Insider: 3 countries where Russia's shadowy Wagner Group mercenaries are known to operate
Newly confirmed Secretary of State Mike Pompeo confirmed two weeks ago that the US killed hundreds of Russians during a large firefight in Syria in early February.
"In Syria now, a handful of weeks ago, the Russians met their match," Pompeo said. "A couple hundred Russians were killed."
The Russians were part of Wagner Group, or Vagner Group, a private mercenary company reportedly contracted by the Syrian government to capture and secure oil and gas fields from ISIS.
The Wagner Group started getting attention in 2014 when its mercenaries fought alongside Russian-backed separatists in Ukraine, before moving to Syria.
While little is still known about the shadowy mercenary group, they are believed to be operating in at least the following three countries:

WNU Editor: I know in Russia these mercenary groups/companies have no problems in getting recruits. They pay well (from a Russian perspective), and if killed the families get enough from the insurance payments to last them for the rest of their lives. I would also not be surprised if these Russian mercenary groups have the blessing of the Russian government .... and if need be .... cooperate with the regular Russian military. As for operating in 3 countries .... do not be surprised if this number increases in the future.

Problem for these groups their government is willing to "sacrifice" them to further an agenda i.e. the Feb 7 massacre by the Americans.
It won't be so easy in the future for the Americans.
The Russians miscalculated resolve.
Still it was not a bad bet by the Russians given how strong the Left is.

I might not have made my point, Smith. What I meant is I suspect those are real soldiers disguised as mercenaries

I would have to read more to be sure, but they did give a few short biographies. The one I read did not seem like that of a professional soldier other than maybe having done mandatory service 10 or more years in the past. Of course that might all be a maskirovka.
If they were Russian soldiers out of uniform, then it was a dirty thing done to them by their command. I could be wrong, but a rule of thumb I read is that if you have a military operation and 15% or more are killed, then the brass f*cked up. Soldiers are not cannon fodder. Many civilians immorally and blithely believe that they are and that it is their lot.
If they were soldiers on a military approved mission, then the lack of support by their military commanders shows they were left out to dry or Russian air warfare capabilities are not to be tested against the Americans due to geo-poltical or capability concerns.
I would much rather think some IRG, SA and military contracting CEO thought "Watch this. This will work."
