Russian Warplanes Are 'Harassing' The U.S. Destroyer USS Donald Cook Off The Coast Of Syria

A Navy source said the U.S. has a number of ships armed with Tomahawk cruise missiles in the region, including the USS Donald Cook, a guided-missile destroyer that has just completed a port call in Cyprus, and got underway in the eastern Mediterranean within range of Syria Monday. U.S. Navy

Zero Hedge: U.S. Navy Destroyer Armed With Tomahawks Arrives Off Syrian Coast, "Harassed" By Russian Warplanes

As the situation in Syria continues to escalate, guided missile destroyer USS Donald Cook has weighed anchor off Syrian territorial waters, and is reportedly being "harassed" by low-flying Russian warplanes, which have buzzed the "Arleigh Burke" class warship at least four times according to CNN Turk.

It is claimed that the US Donald Cook-named destroyer left Cyprus 's Larnaca port and landed near Syrian territorial waters. It was claimed that the missile destroyer named "Arleigh Burke" class Donald Cook (DDG-75) reached Tallus 100 kilometers and had 60 Tomahawk fuses on board. -CNN Turk (translated)

A Navy source confirmed the deployment with the Washington Examiner, who said that the guided-missile-destroyer had just completed a port call in Cyprus, while the Pentagon reportedly draws up plans for how to deal with the situation.

WNU Editor: I am not surprised that the Russian military is checking out this destroyer. If the U.S. is to launch a strike against Syria, this US warship will be on the front line. But what I am surprised about is the lack of US Navy firepower in the eastern part of the Mediterranean. As Zero Hedge rightfully points out .... there are no aircraft carrier strike groups near Syria.

Update: Apparently this story is false .... Reports That Russian Warplanes Are Buzzing The USS Donald Cook Off The Coast Of Syria Are False.

They may have a number of subs , also there are considerable air assets in place.
The question is will Russia go hot for Assad?

WNU Editor/anyone who wants to comment, do you believe the chemical attacks were staged? Do you believe the Russians are actually behind the poisoning? I have very strong questions about the poisoning. It doesnt make a lot of sense. Would Russia kill an ex spy? I absolutley believe they would. However, I dont believe they would do it in a manner so obviously traceable. It doesnt make sense. The American claim is that either Iran, Assad, or Russia implemented the use of chemical weapons. Do you believe that to be factual? If its factual, Russia will back down. If its bs, they will go hot.

If Sergei Skripal was actively involved in denouncing Putin and his government, and using his background and knowledge in Russian intelligence to make his case .... I have zero doubts that someone in the Kremlin would say that maybe something should happen to him. But Sergei Skripal has been off the radar for years. He is old and living a quiet life in the English countryside. It makes no sense (to me) for a Kremlin hit squad to go to the UK and take him out, and in such a public manner. Sorry .... but he is not that important.

Syria is a different story. This is an all-out civil war, and the Assad regime has been brutal while fighting it. But so have the rebels. Who caused this recent chemical attack cannot be even investigated .... it is in an active war zone, and what evidence exists is probably gone. But to launch an all-out attack on Syria based on such flimsy evidence .... a few video clips and testimonials .... I say no. But if th U.S. does launch a strike, and Russian military personnel are injured or killed .... in Syria the Russian military will definitely go hot.

Do not need it, let the Russians concentrate on the destroyer, while B-52's, B-1B's, B-2's and submarines launch cruise missiles.

The editor has nailed it yet again!! He is exactly spot on. There is little that I can add except to point out that people are asking will Russia go hot for Assad. I would suggest that none of these "rebels" are worth going hot against Russia for!! Taking on arguably the most powerful military force in the world is no small matter!!

The editor is also correct that who carried out these attacks cannot even be investigated. My "money" would be on they were staged or the rebels did this in order to manipulate the US further into their war.

Also, with PORUS under investigation and his enemies closing in around him is he being blackmailed to involve further into Syria and to take an unnecessarily hostile stance toward Russia even though his instincts tell him to take a different approach.

For things like this, I blame men like John McCain. They are old, angry, senile, driven by ideology, and are easy to manipulate. Knowing this the "rebels" may have chosen to launch an attack or to stage one.

Between the war the Democratic party and its bureaucratic allies in the DOJ are waging against Trump and the chaos in Middle East policy Trump inherited, a global disaster is in the making. Given the hostilities among the parties I doubt a step back and usage of back channels will do any good, but I recommend they try it. Syria isn't worth 1 American life nor Russian life and too many have already given theirs.
