UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - Russia’s U.N. Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia urged the United States and its allies on Thursday to refrain from military action against Syria over a suspected chemical weapons attack and said he “cannot exclude” war between Washington and Moscow.

Speaking after a closed-door U.N. Security Council meeting requested by Bolivia over threats of military action in Syria by U.S. President Donald Trump, Nebenzia said the situation was even more dangerous because Russian troops are in Syria.

“The immediate priority is to avert the danger of war,” he told reporters. “We hope there will be no point of no return.”

WNU Editor: This is a good analysis form the AP .... Analysis: Putin unlikely to leave strike on Syria unanswered (Vladmir Isachenkov, AP). On a side note .... and just an observation on how the times have changed. This type of talk in the 1980s .... the threat of war between the east and west .... always resulted in massive anti-war demonstrations throughout Europe and in the U.S. that numbered in the hundreds of thousands (if not millions). Today .... nothing.

The lack of anti-war protests isn't because people are apathetic, it's because they just don't believe war between the east and west will ever actually happen. People have forgotten the lessons of the world wars; they may regret that.

Jay,

Haven't had much time to do much posting of late. I've been a bit busy with work and family of late.

I'm pleased you noticed me. At least I think I am.

Time permitting I will read the article and if I feel I have something to contribute I will comment further

Of course the Russian official cannot "rule out" war. While it seems to me that the diplonatic process to defuse tensions is going well at present, there are plenty of crazy people on the American side who may do something to mess uo the whole process. The Russian side likely has their share of crazies too. There's still allot that can go wrong hence we cannot "rule out" war.

The low level proxi wars will increase in intensity because no one has the apitite for a WW. I think Syria is WWII Spanish civil war. This is only going to escalate, just watch.

To be fair, the 1980's was a time of constant war postering between nation states. Even though relations between US/Russia is in the toilet, sudden turn of events of what transpired in Syria and what is being talked about now is not enough to gain momentum to spur on any anti-war demonstrations.

Jay,

I nave to agree with assessment of creating a crisis due to his overblown and ill thought out rhetoric. Fortunately for now at least it appears he is being allowed to stro back in a manner that preserves him some dignity and saves some face for America.

As for the treason charge, I find no evidence of ill intent toward Americans, just a number of misguided policies.
