Taiwan's Military Trains To Repel A Chinese Invasion

Close quarters: China held live-fire drills in the Taiwan Strait last week, an exercise interpreted as a show of force and a message to self-governed Taiwan which China claims as its territory

Reuters: Taiwan to simulate repelling invasion amid China tensions

Taiwan will simulate repelling an invading force, emergency repairs of a major air base and using civilian-operated drones as part of military exercises starting next week, the defense ministry said on Tuesday amid growing tensions with China.

Over the past year or so, China has ramped up military drills around self-ruled and democratic Taiwan, including flying bombers and other military aircraft around the island.

China claims Taiwan as its sacred territory, and its hostility toward the island has grown since the 2016 election as president of Tsai Ing-wen from the pro-independence Democratic Progressive Party.

China has been issuing increasingly strident calls for Taiwan to toe the line, even as Tsai has pledged to maintain the status quo and keep the peace.

This just feels like the 1930's again. Everything is pointing to war. Not a good thing.

"When you believe you will lose...you will definitely lose." This is very true. I have seen people achieve what seemed impossible by believing it could be achieved.

On the other hand, there is being delusional. Those who are delusional are prone to make stupid decisions.

Modern day examples of delusions are included but not linited to the following. 1.) America is a "superpower." 2.) America is "exceptional." 3.) America is "the greatest country in the world." Fortunately few Americans buy into such ridiculous nonsense. When political leaders buy into such nonsense and act on it, bad outcomes are all but guaranteed.

On the other hand, sometimes a "delusion" becomes a miracle. Examples of this would be but are not limited to: 1.)a legally blind person daring to believe she could make the "able bodied" olympic team and doing so and 2.) Ronald Reagan believing the US and its "allies" could take down the Soviet Union. In both of these cases, it worked out well.

What is delusional and what is positive thinking? It's often times hard to tell and how does this apply to Tawain? First of all to believe Tawain can defeat China in a straight up war, at present, is likely delusional. If Tawainese realize this, they are facing reality. Once we face reality, we can assess our situation and come up with realistic solutions to our challenges. Failure to do this is, well, delusional and will generally end badly.

With this in mind what can Tawain do? I'd suggest that knowing they probably cannot win a war against China make China's victory as pyric as possible so they'd never consider such an attack in the first place. This could be done by developing a robust nuclear arsenal and possibly manipulate America into being their chumps the Jaoan and South Korea have. Americans are catching on to this and America's ability to serve in this capacity is very limited now. As such, a robust nuclear arsenal and the means to deliver it seem the best option.

Economic options should also be considered. Is there something Tawain can supply China better and less expensively than anyone else can? If so, going to war means China might lose this. In such a case, they are going to be less likely to want to go to war. When conbined with a robust nuclear deterrent this may just be enough. There is hope for Tawain!!
