15 votes to six along with seventeen abstentions according the Guardian strongly suggests that there is not as much unity on this issue as the headlines would suggest. By rushing to judgment and not doing this the right way with a thorough investigation this may well come back to haunt us. We made this mistake with Iraq and we know what that costs. Here the stakes and he risks are much higher. As such, it would have made much more sense to have taken our time and conducted a proper investigation. I think ideologies caused some to get ahead of common sense. Unfortunately such mind sets can be easily mislead. We should have learned by now to treat what our governments tell us with extreme skepticism especially when faced with such risks. So far evidence to support the actions taken simply has not been presented and it becomes even more troubling to note that the British can't even prove the Russians were behind this.
Just a political smear campaign to vilify Russia as U.S. and our allies want to contain Russian interests .(Along with China and Iran and whomever else is a geopolitical foe
ROB VET,
Perhaps we do need to contain Russia. If so, we need to understand just who and what it is we are dealing with. Essentially Russia is a major world power who is ever bit equal to America and in some ways is stronger than America. We go to war with them best case scenario we win at EXTREME costs!! We may not win this one.
A careful study of Sun Tzu would be wise. "Know your enemy, know yourself, and you prevail everytime." I've heard many pundits claim America as a "superpower," "exceptional," and "the greatest country in the world." America is none of these things. If someone believes such nonsense, they obviously don't know themselves. Since they clearly don't understand Russia either, they'd succumb in any war.
America today is hedonistic, seeks pleasure above all, and does not want to be an empire. Smart conclusion among leadership: don't take America to war against a top tier world power like Russia. Sun Tzu also said it best to paraphrase "if your goals can be achieved without fighting, do so." To add to this the great Dale Carnegie said, "the best way to win an argument is to not get into one." Given modern realities, we have the utterly insane path put forth by the Pentagon of trying to confront Russia and China anywhere and everywhere. This isn't possible. As Sun Tzu would say, "know yourself."
The path put forth by POTUS at least when he resists political pressure and stands up to the generals suggests engage Russia, understand they are equal to us and in some ways superior to us, and acts accordingly good outcomes are possible.
Maybe there is a "third way." So far it hasn't been presented. As such, the only reasonable approach is engage Russia, respect them, and treat them as the equal and in some ways superior power that they are. At this point the DJT approach is the only viable one. Essentially treat people who have good relations with the Russian "oligarchs" as national treasures and not as enemies and do everything you can not to hurt Russians and good outcomes are possible perhaps even probable.
As Sun Tzu would say, "know your enemy, know yourself, and you win," I'd suggest invoking Ronald Reagan. He helped take down communism. Russians are most grateful to him for that!! Failure to know you or your enemy will end badly. So far America's leaders neither understand America nor their enemy.
Dismissing all critics immediately as "Russian bots" is certain to end badly. This is alegacy of the mental illness of Hiliary Clinton. Unfortunately it has affected a large number of people.
