All Roads Now Lead To President Trump .....But Not The Russian One

Susan B. Glasser, New Yorker: Donald Trump’s Pursuit of an Oval Office Meeting with Vladimir Putin

Inside the mystery behind the President’s surprise invitation to Russia’s leader, and his team’s struggle to figure out what to do about it.

Late on Monday evening, the Secretary of Commerce, Wilbur Ross, started making calls to European allies. A few hours earlier, they had got word from sources inside the Trump Administration that the President was poised to impose costly steel and aluminum tariffs by the midnight deadline. No one knew for sure (“The decision lies with the President,” German Chancellor Angela Merkel had said on Friday, standing next to Trump, after flying to Washington to lobby him personally), but it seemed like there could be a trade war between the United States and its closest partners within hours. WNU Editor: Now is not the time for a Putin - Trump summit. There is too much politics at play in Washington right now, and in an election year optics are important. If there is going to be a meeting, it will be after the November Congressional elections .... and the Russians are at ease with that. And besides .... I understand that both leaders are on the phone with each other on a regular basis.

Now is absolutely the time for a Trump-Putin summit. You want to avoid World War III, it must be done now, politics be damned. The reality is that the intention underlying all of the so-called politics is to prevent such a meeting. All of the provocations--Russia gate, the Skripal affair, the fake chemical attack in Douma, Netanyahu's antics on Iran--it's all designed to keep the pot boiling in favor of a US-Russia military confrontation. The way to outflank all of that fakery is with a Trump-Putin meeting, and the sooner the better.
