CNN: Iran warns US abandoning nuclear deal would be 'historic mistake'

(CNN)Iran warned the US on Sunday that abandoning the nuclear deal would be a "historic mistake," less than one week before President Donald Trump is set to make a decision on the pact.

In a televised speech, President Hassan Rouhani said Iran had plans for "whatever decision is made by Trump" and that "when it comes to weapons and defending our country, we will not negotiate with anybody."

His comments come days before the May 12 deadline for Trump to decide whether or not to continue waiving sanctions on Iran that were lifted under the deal, formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

Under US law, the President has to re-certify the agreement every three months.

The US will not abandon the nuclear deal or seek to renegotiate it unless it has the support of its "allies" and, at a minimum, a willingness of Russia and China to look the other way. Surely Iranian knows all of this. At present, the support of "allies" is non existent and there is zero evidence that Russia and China will look the other way.

In this environment, the statements on the part of the Iranians remind me of the expression "thou doest protest much." Then we have reports of John Kerry scrambling to salvage the deal. He's trying to salvage a deal that is in no danger UNLESS there are things going on behind the scenes we don't know about. If there were Iranian agents in the US government would certainly inform Iranian leadership of such developments. Also, John Kerry would certainly be informed by soneone of such developments. Maybe POTUS really has managed to get support for alteration of the nuclear deal as this is the only way it gets changed.

The thing is this. Iran had an agreement with what - 170 nations ? - on the proper use of nuclear power. That agreement was abrogated in the face of constant US subversion of the terms of the NPT Treaty....which the US also signed. Any Iranian who renegotiates such a treaty with the US shows what folly it was to negotiate with the US ( over multilateral agreements with dozens of nations in the first instance )....which does not keep treaties. That would fly about as well as North American indians redoing their agreements with Washington. They know what it is to be screwed...and so does Iran.
