WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Donald Trump has ordered the Pentagon to prepare options for reducing the number of U.S. troops in South Korea, the New York Times reported on Thursday, citing several people briefed on the deliberations.
Reduced U.S. troop levels are not intended to be a bargaining chip in Trump’s planned summit in late May or early June with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un about Pyongyang’s nuclear weapons program, the Times said.
The officials said, however, that a peace treaty between the two Koreas could diminish the need for the 23,500 U.S. soldiers currently stationed on the peninsula, the newspaper said.

Idiots in South Korea, who thought themselves good liberals had always protested the U.s>s troops. Do not know if they were paid to protest. It is a fair question to ask because across the water a short distance the Japanese communist party would pay people to protest on their lunch hour. Further the USSR used to pay Gus Hall. So how much of the South Korean radical Left is astroturf is a fair question.
When the soldiers were withdrawn there was great consternation and concern in South Korea which far outweighed the liberals.
My point is that a 3 to 5 thousand troop reduction would not be a bad thing for the South Koreans or for Americans ... and see how it goes for a few years.
If Trump wants to cut 10 or 20 thousand, he will get some vocal feedback.
However, he still better than the putrid, evil Alinsky-ite disciple that won't go away.

Adding a few tens or a few hundred spec ops to say Yemen is not the same as withdrawing thousands from Korea. That is not a mere shuffling.

How each of these Nations are treated with an offical Peace treaty is not known. Time changes everything.

A renegotiated SOFA with "Korea" will be implemented at some point in the wake of an offical Peace Treaty. That one is interesting to game out.

What about active NORK soldiers on leave?

Nukes are not the only concern. What will be the conventional troop levels for both ROK and DPRK? All that Artillery is going somewhere. Where?

Trump: Troop withdrawal from South Korea 'not on the table'
Trump is being his usual self. He likes reconnaissance by fire, which the military has actually used in the past. I do not know if they have used it after WW2, but this is not an unknown thing.
You might say Trump is pulling a Governor Brown. Brown not being unintelligent (but having sold his soul) can think of or argue any position. He can discuss any issue. For that people think he is bright. Trump lays down markers in all directions. So there is a precedent if he later wants to move in that direction. IT also allows hi to see how people react and to take the temperature on a subject.
I have seen Trump say this or say that so many times, it doesn't bother me. There's a few or several reasons he does it and they all have validity in some part. Trump announces something and he sees who will defend what or what people really want. Sure people like Jeb would take the temperature, too. But people like him do it in such a tepid manner & so correctly that they get rickrolled more than 1/2 the time before they get anywhere.
