David Axe, War is Boring: This Photo Shows a U.S. Navy Attack Submarine 'Sinking' a British Aircraft Carrier

To prove they could have sunk the carrier, Corner Brook’s crew snapped a photo through the periscope—and the Canadian navy helpfully published it.“The picture represents hard evidence that the submarine was well within attack parameters and would have been successful in an attack,” boasted Cmdr. Luc Cassivi, commander of the Canadian submarine division.

A photo depicting an American nuclear-powered submarine poking its periscope above the waves—within shooting distance of a British aircraft carrier during a war game—is a useful reminder of one of the most important truths of naval warfare.

For every sailor who’s not in a submarine, submarines are real scary.

Stealthy and heavily-armed, subs are by far the most powerful naval vessels in the world for full-scale warfare—and arguably the best way to sink those more obvious icons of naval power, aircraft carriers.

WNU Editor:  That must have been quite a surprise for the crew of the aircraft carrier to spot these subs on the side.

I'm sure we will have a tech breakthrough soon (or exists already), making it much easier to spot even the most stealthy subs... and it will change the triad balance again, so we have to be prepared and not over-estimate the longevity of their stealth capabilities. Because once their stealth is gone, defending a slow moving, physically big and tempting target is getting hard. Not impossible, but hard.

There are many ways that come to mind how technology breakthroughs can change this stealth capabilities.. for example, networked mini drones that expand our already existing underwater listening networks, advances in laser technology, advances in sonar and other mapping technologies.. actual physical tagging of subs when they leave the port (and removing of tags when they return).. that's a more clandestine thing, but I'm sure right now some teams are doing this, or hopefully attempting it, using remotely controlled mini-drones..

So yeah, I wouldn't rely on stealth whatsoever. And I don't think "they" do either.

@WNU are you following the response a Chinese looking prom dress caused world wide and especially in the US with calls about cultural appropriation? see the article by jeffwang on cnn.. unbelievable. .if the left cannot get their bending over for everyone and every cause under control, then social justice warriors that are upset about everything (and with dubious motives) will not only dictate social conversations and how we are all supposed to behave, but they will start dictating foreign policy. If you cannot even wear another culture's prom dress (it's even disputed that it in fact is Chinese, by the beforesaid author himself), how could you dare talking about a 9 dash line in the south China Sea? The same arguments. ..historically someone claims the dress is Chinese style (disputed)..historically someone claims south China Sea belongs to china (disputed)...You know what I mean? There's something going on here with the Chinese prom dress and the cultural change in the US. It feels engineered and coordinated and the only one that's actually still rock hard American is Trump, I hate to say it. ..all these other guys on what used to be my side are bending over and accept being called racist and ignorant and worse things for wearing a dress or speaking your mind or express your passion for something. In America. And the left 100% drives this issue passionately. And the absolute winners of such a cultural change - that WILL impact also foreign policy and behaviour - are those who don't want American intervention. Think Assad in 10 years. By the left's logic it'll be "who are you to tell someone else how to do their killing"...the left is really getting scary. If I wouldn't reject conspiracy theories, the biggest success Russians could have is driving the lefts agenda and saw dispute among the population with these unamerican, always apologising attitude.. like you have to read the story and feedback this girl received..unbelievable in context with all that's going on in SJW world views

"a Chinese looking prom dress"

I think the girl looked smashing in the Chinese dress.

Plus those Chinese dresses look pretty close to flappers worn in the 1920s. All you would need to do to the flappers is make them a little tighter fitting and maybe add some embroidery.

That is if China had not existed someone would have invented them within 50 or 100 years of the invention of the flapper.

Liberals should take the log out of their eye.
