Task & Purpose: Marine Corps Commandant: ‘We’re The Mujahideen’ In Afghanistan
Back in the 1980s, the United States considered the Mujahideen the “good guys” because they were waging a guerilla war against the Soviets Union in Afghanistan. Fast forward to the present and the Afghan Mujahideen are now widely viewed as the Islamic fundamentalists who eventually begat the Taliban, Al Qaeda, ISIS, and other folks who will hopefully meet their end at the business end of a MOAB.
Yet for some reason, Marine Corps Commandant Gen. Robert Neller awkwardly invoked the 80s image of Afghan freedom fighters while trying to strip away the Taliban and ISIS’ pretense of representing Islam in the middle of a May 2 press briefing on the state of the Navy of the Navy Department.

WNU Editor: Strange .... from what I understand ..... most Afghans regard U.S. soldiers as .... U.S. soldiers. And quite frankly .... I think most (if not all) U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan see themselves as U.S. soldiers .... not as Mujahideen. So why make the comparison now? Who knows.

One thing I had read about US troops in Vietnam was, t hat by the end of the war, we were better at guerilla warfare than the Vietcong and the NVA were. I think that is where the US general is going in Afghanistan.
Yeah I heard that too and saw a documentary about it I think...3 or 4 partsl series...way back..called Rambo, I think. The soldier's name was John J Rambo or something similar. Man he was something. Would have chewed up the Vietcong in its own jungle.
Dude...haha If you believe this you're insane. I've spent years in Vietnam. Those guys are not just way way more hardcore but can endure things with a smile. And on top they need much less to get by/survive in the jungle. .I am there right now and you have no idea haha "better at guerilla warfare than the Vietcong". It took me two years to adapt to the climate here and be able to work out in 35C every day. ..they do this literally at 4am, then again in the evening and have 8 packs, I kid you not. The 60yr old hear do chin ups and crunches on steel constructions I can only use for dips. They use their full body weight in their shins ffs and do 30-50...you're insane! LoL

A Mujahid is someone involved in fighting a jihad. Now the jihadis or mujahideen were seen as the "good guys" during the cold war only because they had a common enemy in the communists. However the jihad is also hostile to US or Western states. This general is making a mistake trying to conflate "good guys" with "mujahideen"
