Reuters: Canada parliament condemns U.S. attack on Trudeau, country simmers

OTTAWA (Reuters) - Canada’s House of Commons on Monday unanimously condemned the personal attacks on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau by U.S. President Donald Trump and his surrogates as the famously polite nation simmered over the weekend broadsides by its U.S. ally.

Lawmakers gave unanimous consent for a motion backing Canadian steel and aluminum, hit by U.S. tariffs, as well as the supply management system that supports key agriculture sectors, and gave a standing ovation for the government’s response to the Trump administration’s verbal attacks on Trudeau.

The motion in parliament, introduced by the opposition New Democrats, rejected “disparaging ad hominem statements by U.S. officials which do a disservice to bilateral relations.”

WNU Editor: I live in Canada .... and so I have been exposed to all the whining from Canadian politicians (from all parties) as well as from the media and the pundits, that President Trump was (fill in the blank) towards Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau. As to what is my take on the entire G7 Summit and what happened there .... everyone was brewing for a fight (not just President Trump) .... but the media focus is on President Trump .... 'An Unprecedented Scandal': How Newspapers Around the World Reacted to Trump's Behavior at the G-7 Summit (Time). But looking at it from a macro point of view .... and what people with money are thinking .... everyone that I know is realizing that the old way of doing business with the U.S. when it comes to trade is changing, and everyone better find a way to accommodate the U.S.. Bottom line .... the GDP of the U.S. is greater than all the other G6 members combined, and hoping that the U.S. will continue "business as usual" is a short-sighted policy to continue .... but I predict that is exactly what all of these governments are going to pursue. As to how Americans are reacting to all of this news .... as long as there is record employment and real wage increases .... opposition from American Big Business and those who oppose President Trump politically are going to be heard (and ignored).

A little shake up once in a while keeps things healthy. I approve of what Trump is doing; we need to stay ahead of China and the EU/G7 need to recognize this. Fair is Fair.

Yeah but with a 21 trillion debt and many countries already thinking about ditching the dollar, the US is going to suffer

I think Trump was itching for somebody at the G7 to insult him so he could look macho before heading to Singapore. I think for Trump, the G7 meeting was pure theater and he was going to act the part of tough unpredictably American to give pause to Kim.

Trudeau just happened to be the one to stick up his hand but it could have been Macron or Merkel just as well.

I read today that Germany launched a deep review of its relationship with American last year. I think they realize the old game is over and a new one is starting.

Anon,

I have a different "take" on this. I think Trump went to the G-7 meeting to negotiate trade agreements in good faith. While he knew there would be disagreements and he knew they'd be tense, he didn't account for the personal vendettas against him.

I think Trudeau and others sought to humiliate Trump in the run up to the NK summit perhaps in a calculated attempt to undermine him and America's position. Judging by the reactions of Trump officials I think they interpreted Trudeau's statements as sheer malice towards POTUS as part of a deliberate attempt to undermine POTUS and the American position.

Unfortunately given the doubling down by these people I must concur with Trump officials. Had this bern mere pettiness common decency would have prevailed and a heartfelt apology would have been issued to POTUS by now. The accusation that Canada is or has been pushed around by Canada is not only ridiculous but is deeply offensive and to do it in the manner it was done makes it worse.

For what its worth, I hope Germany does alter its position toward America. Treat us an equal, respect us, stop degrading us, and stop treating us as a piggy bank you Rob from at will.

Think on this. POTUS was headed to intense negotiations where the lives of millions of Americans hang in the balance based on the ultimate outcome, his wife whom he loves dearly is very ill, and there's a witch hunt for him back home. He has no support in Singapore save for the prayers and support of Americans back home. In contrast Kim comes in on a Chinese plane, has a full entourage of support with him, and gets treated like a media rick star!! Sure DJT had his team but that's like a child's water gun vs an ocean!!

To have gotten ANYTHING against such a stacked deck was anazing for POTUS. During such a time for PM Trudeau to have done what he did is as close to unforgivable as it gets!!

Rodger,
Yesterday on a CTV news panel a spokesman for the NDP brought it up, and the reaction of the host to shut down that conversation ASAP was a sight to see. Prime Minister Trudeau and his staff are very very sensitive on how he is seen by the Canadian public .... and it is rare to see them goof up on that one. And no .... it was not because of a lighting issue that they are now claiming it is what we saw.
