German Chancellor Merkel Wants Europe To Step Up In Trump’s New World Order

Bloomberg: Merkel Urges Europe to Step Up in Trump’s New World Order

(Bloomberg) -- Chancellor Angela Merkel made a forceful pitch for Europe to play a more assertive role in global affairs as U.S. President Donald Trump dismantles the post-World War II order, setting the stage for a potential tense standoff at the Group of Seven summit this week.

The German leader again questioned the durability of trans-Atlantic relations by referring to eye-raising comments she made over a year ago in which she said that “the times when we could fully rely on others are to some extent over.” Those words, spoken at a beer-tent election rally, were a reaction to Trump hectoring European leaders for not spending enough on defense at a North Atlantic Treaty Organization summit in Brussels. Since then, more fuel has been added to the fire.

“That was my takeaway from the NATO summit, and in the meantime I continue to feel confirmed by my statement,” Merkel said in Munich on Wednesday, this time to a meeting of the European People’s Party, a grouping of center-right parties in the European Parliament.

WNU Editor: German Chancellor Merkel has alienated many countries in Europe with her open borders policy towards migrants. Germany's defense budget and military preparedness is viewed by everyone as completely inadequate. Germany has trade restrictions and tariffs that protects its markets .... while hurting others .... including fellow EU members. And now she wants the EU to step up and be more forceful in global affairs .... while doing the exact opposite back home. Here is an easy prediction .... no one is going to take her seriously.

We think it won't help her and no one will take her seriously, however, anti-Americanism seems to run rampant in Europe. As such, if the policy makes no sense but it is anti-American or the leader is bad but he/she is anti-American many may well be on board with the policy and the leader who pushes them even if they make no sense.

Actually Trump did not dismantle the post WW2 order. This "order" has been unraveling for some time now. Trying to keep this "order" together was/is futile. As such, what DJT is doing is simply bringing America's policies and procedures in line with reality.

I think we are in a normalizing state of affairs as the hyperpower US shrinks back to a global power among another global power, China. The Atlantic Alliance was created to push back against the Soviet Union which died almost 30 years ago. China and the US are now in competition economically and militarily so there is diminished need for the Atlantic Alliance now that Russia has returned to a more historical normal size and strength.

Prior to WWII the US wasn't allied closely with Europe, especially Germany or France. Now we're seeing the US under Trump speak the obvious, Germany and France aren't really needed for US security, so are they worth the price we pay in lost jobs and defense dollars? With the US federal deficit unbounded and growing, future Dem leaders won't be able to shift things back once Trump is out of office.
