U.S. Officially Suspends War Games With South Korea 'Indefinitely'

South Korean (blue headbands) and U.S. Marines take positions as amphibious assault vehicles of the South Korean Marine Corps fire smoke bombs during a U.S.-South Korea joint landing operation drill in Pohang, South Korea, March 12, 2016.

Daily Mail/AFP: Trump administration officially suspends August war games with South Korea 'indefinitely' after surprising his own Pentagon with announcement in Singapore

* The president had surprised people in his own administration by saying in Singapore that 'provocative' war games with South Korea would end
* The move is a significant break in how the U.S. and South Korean militaries have worked together for decades
* The White House sees Tuesday's summit between Trump and Kim Jong-un as as wildly successful
* But Secretary of State Mike Pompeo warned that peace efforts still face risks, and insisted sanctions must be maintained for now
* Pyongyang typically reacts furiously to U.S.-South Korean military drills. Last year the North fired ballistic missiles over Japan, triggering global panic

The US military has indefinitely postponed major joint exercises with South Korea, an official said Thursday, acting on President Donald Trump's pledge to halt the 'provocative' military drills following his summit with North Korea's Kim Jong-un.

The move, a significant break in how the U.S. and South Korean militaries have worked together for decades, came even as Secretary of State Mike Pompeo warned that peace efforts still face risks, and insisted sanctions must be maintained until Pyongyang dismantles its nuclear arsenal.

This is very appropriate, and I laugh when I hear that the Pentagon did not know; I am sure some people didn't but sure Mattis was in the loop! Ugh, media is so bad

"The reason great dealmakers do not OPENLY celebrate a deal, especially one that is not complete, is that it shows weakness to the other side"
- Donald J Trump

Don't have to jerk it to CNN to see someone call themselves out. Priceless!

Michael,

"Very appropriate" is an understatement. It's a bit like "don't chew your food with your mouth open." Adults know such things and don't have to be told.

"Indefinite" is a nebulous term and can always be changed depending on the circumstances. Besides the real deterrent is in the submarines off coast and the long range bombers.

It's not like poor little South Korea is being left defenseless. Besides that there's been no real effort to date to redeploy US troops.

I would suggest not thinking of this as "celebrating." Think of it in terms of explaining to the stakeholders what has been accomplished to date.

The American people and especially the South Koreans seem especially appreciative. It's important that POTUS communicate with the stakeholders what's been accomplished much like a corporate executive communicates with the board.

I would suggest not thinking of this in terms of a "victory" or "defeat" for one leader or the other. Think of it in terms of America MUST have peace. Once this is understood, POTUS'S policies, while maybe flawed, will make sense.

Gosh you don't understand trump even several years in. This is him using the power of world wide media coverage to articulate and solidify the terms in front of the world - with the goal to keep Kim locked in - as he's done all the time.

You just don't get it. If you keep watching cnn you never will. Honestly 5 years ago I was 100%Democrat and hated fox..now cnn is way way worse and fox is actually giving you a bit more honest insights and not bury everything that has come out and tell you about lala land.

Great move by President Trump. He gave a gift that was unexpected. Who doesn't like receiving a gift? Especially one that has been looked at as provocative. He backed up the signed agreement in Singapore with action. One more reason for Chairman Kim to keep on the peaceful path. A path the people of both Koreas, China, Japan and the USA all want.

Consider the Team Spirit exercises a success. Time for Team De-nuke.

There are of course some elements in all those nations who would rather see a threat of conflict. Lucky for us at this time in history, they are in decline.

I'm personally happy to see this current path to peace.
